The St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services proudly presents the 2012 Annual Health Fair: The Way to Wellness. The Health Fair will be from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on October 26 at the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department. Health screenings include Skin Cancer, Hearing, Depression and several others. Flu shots will be available (Medicare card holders should bring their cards; a $20 payment, by cash or check is appreciated from those not eligible for Medicare). Free chair massages will be provided by Body Anew massages. A Commercial Shredder truck will be available for the community from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This service is available for any individual who wishes to shred documents, including financial and other personally identifiable documents they no longer need. On Tuesday, October 16, at 10:45 a.m., “Senior Matters” discussion group will meet at the Northern Senior Activity Center to talk about managing family relationships. Structured like a small study or focus group, participants explore issues and concerns related to aging in a small group setting, facilitated by Elizabeth Holdsworth (LCSW-C). On October 15, at 10 a.m., a Bunco league will be meeting at the Northern Senior Activity Center. The group meets the third Monday of every month. Cards for Troops
On Tuesday, October 16 at 1:30 p.m. the Garvey Senior Activity Center will make handmade greeting cards for our troops stationed abroad to send home to their family and friends. All handmade cards will be donated to Cards for Soldiers, a nonprofit organization that provides homemade greeting cards to service members to send home to family while away from home. Practice Your Tai Chi for Arthritis with New Friends and Certified Instructor
If you’ve learned the core AND advanced movements of the Tai Chi for Arthritis program and would like to practice it with others who have done so, the Weisman Room at Loffler Senior Activity Center is available to you for this purpose, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 -10:00 a.m. On Thursdays there will be an instructor to guide you through the practice. Art with Faith at Loffler Senior Activity Center
Once a month, Loffler hosts a workshop with local professional artist Faith Gaillot. Faith has won many awards, belongs to several of the local artist guilds, and has developed her own techniques which she shares in her monthly workshops. The next one will be Thursday, October 18 at 1 p.m. at Loffler Senior Activity Center. This month’s painting will be a watercolor that features a creek, distant mountains, a tree and grasses. Techniques involved will be wet-on-wet as well as dry brush. Cost for this class is $40 which includes all materials needed to complete your take-home painting.
