Celebrate Leonardtown’s 16h Annual Earth Day on the Square, Sunday, April 17, 2016 from 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM in historic downtown Leonardtown and at the picturesque Leonardtown Wharf Park.
Environmental and non-profit organizations will be on site to provide information on energy, land and water conservation, recycling, gardening, sustainability, biodiesel fuel and solar power. Natural cosmetics, cleaning supplies, baby products, and hand crafts will also be available for purchase, and many of the local restaurants and merchants will be offering “Earth Day” menu and merchandise specials all day!
NEW this year! – Michael Schwedick from Reptile World, Inc. will be doing two afternoon live shows with exotic reptiles from all over the world. Marigold, Rent the Chicken and others will be on the newly created Living Green Demo Stage to show some easy and practical steps toward more sustainable living, Officer Peggy Smolarsky will teach kids about bicycle safety (feel free to bring your bikes!) and kids can go to the Marigold table to participate in the Great Cloth Diaper Change Junior Edition.
As you make your way around the Square, talk to local Earth Day experts. Visit with SMECO, T.N. Bowes, and Solar Tech about energy efficiency. Get up close and personal with all kinds of animals including goats, bees, greyhounds, wild birds and amphibious creatures. Hear about land stewardship and conservation from the Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust, the UMD Extension Groups, the St. Mary’s County Department of Health Clearwater program, St. Mary’s County River Watershed Association, the Commission on the Environment, and the St. Mary’s County Farm Bureau. Representatives from the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, Evolve Yoga + Wellness, Gentle Green Dental Care, and Baltimore School of Reflexology will discuss fighting disease and living a healthier lifestyle. Don’t leave the event without your kettle korn from St. Mary’s Soil Conservation District Environthon, cotton candy to support the efforts of Feral Cat Rescue, make-your-own Hawaiian shaved ice at the solar-powered Kona Ice truck, and all natural smoothies from Cameron’s Smoothie Shack and the Good Earth Natural Foods Company.
The free Leonardtown Express trolley will take you back up the hill to enjoy the sounds of local favorites David Norris, Harmony Grit, Trudy and the Falcons and Folk Salad Trio and dance along with the music of the Celtic Society and the elegant and colorful Daughters of Veda. Look for strolling minstrel Mark Giuffrida and his recycled material instruments and peek in to the Leonardtown Arts Center and Yellow Door Art Studios to view beautiful artwork created from recycled materials.
From 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM traffic into the historic downtown area will be detoured to free parking areas around the Town. Earth Day on the Square in Leonardtown is sponsored by the Leonardtown Business Association and the Commissioners of Leonardtown, and is funded in part by a grant from the St. Mary’s County Arts Council’s Community Arts Development Grant Program and the Maryland State Arts Council.
