The Cow & The Fish Restaurant Review

12963558_995523007235302_2243754674841697289_nIn April, we tried out a brand new restaurant…The Cow & The Fish. Located in Hollywood. MD (on the northbound side, north of the fire department), the restaurant opened at the end of October, 2015.

Chef Michael and his wife, Silvia, own and operate this new venture. They specialize in steaks and seafood with a Mediterranean flair. Chef Michael runs the kitchen and Silvia runs the front of the house. Chef Michael earned his culinary degree in Spain where he learned about Mediterranean style cuisine. They decided to bring the flavors of Europe to Southern Maryland. They pride themselves on locally-sourced (if possible) fresh, authentic food. It was so nice to meet, and talk, with Silvia. We made reservations, but got there early enough, that we didn’t really need them.

The interior of the restaurant was very comfortable and inviting. It’s small, yet cozy. The main dining room has nine tables. There was a larger table in the main room. There is also a bar. It’s cute, the bar stools had pretty cushions. They bring in local musicians to perform.

From the time we walked in, until we left, everyone was very friendly. We started our meal with the Crab Dip appetizer. It was almost all crab, with some cheese. It had a wonderful flavor and was perfect on the buttered toast points. I decided to have the Crab Cake and Shrimp special, while my husband had their signature dish…called The Sandie. It was an 8-ounce Angus Flat Iron Steak served with a skewer of Shrimp and Scallops. The meals were both delicious. The crab cake had a lot of crab meat and not too much filler and the steak was cooked perfectly. We kept saying we really liked the flavors, but couldn’t quite pinpoint the specific spices and herbs. We figured it probably was the Mediterranean influence.

We finished by sharing a dessert. The Lemon Cake was light and didn’t have an overwhelming lemon flavor; it was the perfect balance. It was not made in house, but brought in from a local baker.

We really enjoyed our meal and the entire dining experience. Their hours are Monday – Saturday (closed Sunday) from11:30am – 9:00pm.

We will be back!!

I am glad you had a great meal. My girlfriend and I recently visited this establishment and we were greatly disappointed. Our disappointment did not make it past the drinks and appetizer. On the evening of our visit there was only three other tables occupied and the establishment did not seem all that busy. We were promptly seated and given menus. As we were reviewing the menu our server informed us they were out of burgers for the evening.

I ordered iced tea and the glass came with very little ice. The drink starts with ice for a reason. We asked about the menu to our server and she admitted she was new and did not know the answer to our questions. To her credit she was prompt in finding out the answers for us.

We also had the crab dip and it tasted nothing like crab. It had a great amount of cheese and the main taste seemed to be the spices used to mask other flavors. The toast points that came with it were over cooked and charred. The charring overwhelmed the bread flavor and left a burnt taste in our mouths. When we asked our server if we could order another round of just the toast she was no sure if we could. Off she went to find the answer and when she returned she told us “No” but she could get us crackers. After that we asked for the check, paid our bill and left.

With this being Southern Maryland and the restaurant having a limited menu we felt the dip could of been so much better. Also with the limited menu I could not understand how you could run out of burgers and with Cow in the name there was only two type of steaks on the menu. Maybe we came in on a bad night. I am not sure if we will return.

So nice to read about The Cow and The Fish. The interior is beautiful, and the food looks excellent. I go by there several times but was never sure exactly what type of selection they offer. Seems like a very nice place, especially if they bring in local musicians to perform. They really need to put out some signage out front to advertise the food and/or the musician playing that night. I think that would greatly help attract business, because sadly I never see too many cars at the restaurant.

      Mary,
I don’t want to be mean here. Are you giving us a review of the restaurant based on driving by? You say the food looks good, what does it taste like? (That would seem to carry more weight) You say that you’ve gone by there several times, did you stop and eat? You say you were never sure exactly what type of selection they offer. Did you read the menu? I really don’t understand your comments and what they’re based upon. Perhaps you could re-write your review and be a little more clear. Thanks!

My Mom & I went there for lunch (our Wed. lunch outings). It was very friendly, what we had was good. A little chilly with the a/c but thats better than to warm.

My fiancé and I stopped and tried the restaurant out, and we’re not happy what so ever.
It is a quaint place with a bar right in front of the door, and a few tables off to the left.
We were seated promptly, and our drinks were served quickly as well. The menu is tiny, and
Nothing of Mediterranean influence, which the bio states. There are only three choices for both
Beef and seafood, and the seafood prices were stated as ‘market price’… Very off putting.
We started out with soup because nothing else on the sparse menu sounded appetizing. I ordered the
Broccoli and cheese, and my fiancé ordered the cream of crab. They came in tiny ramekins, and I must say we’re not
Good. The broccoli soup was salty and tasted like velveeta, and had no real chunks of broccoli. It was over
Blended and not good… Panera makes better soup. The cream of crab was made with tons of back fin meat, which is
Great, but was over saturated with Old Bay, and no cream, just 2%milk. $16 for a soda, and two tiny soups is outrageous
Especially when you can have much better soups at Panera; and that is sad. We will not be back to this establishment,
    There are much better choices.

Been here several times worth family and friends; it’s always a nice experience. The atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming. The food is good and flavorful, and you can tell they take the time to arrange it and make a good presentation rather than just slapping it on the plate. Silvia is very friendly and comes over to talk and check how things are going, and she is very good at selecting a good wine to pair with the meals. I’ll definitely continue going here. It’s nice to see the place get some coverage!

Visited the restaurant about 3 months after opening. I must say that, for the prices they are charging…. the food quality and taste should be MUCH better. The service was excellent and there is great potential to be had however, the pricing is more upscale than the food and atmosphere is.
