Urban BBQ is serving up BBQ, wings, salads, chili and other delicious food!
I went in last week, before they opened, to talk with the corporate owners and the franchisees.
Urban BBQ is a local chain, opened by Marylanders Lee and Dave in 2003. They now have 3 corporate and 8 franchise locations. They hope to grow to 15 restaurants by next year. Lee and Dave are friendly and entertaining. I love listening to their restaurant stories, and their food philosophy. They have been at the La Plata restaurant helping prepare for opening, and they are sticking around for a couple of weeks to make sure things are running smoothly. Franchise owners Christie and Billy are wonderful! They have worked hard to get the restaurant open and you can tell they really care about their customers having a great dining experience. I like to stop in just to chat with everyone. I also love their interest in the community and wanting to be involved.
Now to the food…I love it! One thing I like is the concept. You order at the counter, but there is plenty of seating to eat in. I’m pretty busy and often I don’t have time for a sit-down restaurant, but I don’t want fast food either Urban BBQ is great because you get your food quickly, and you can still sit down.
Okay…back to the food. They have smoked Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Pulled Chicken and Pit Sausage (Chicken Siracha or Pork Chesapeake). The sausage is make by Logan’s Sausage Company in Alexandria, to Urban BBQ’s specifications. The brisket and the pork are smoked overnight with a hardwood mix of oak and hickory. I tasted the Beef Brisket and it was tender and flavorful. They also have Spare Ribs and Bone-in Chicken. Their wings are marinated in red sauce for 48 hours. I ordered my with the Dragon Honey sauce and they were amazing. Meaty with a great flavor, not too spicy. Important to me…they have chili!! I love chili, and theirs is so good! It is made with black and pinto beans, beef brisket, ground chuck and cumin, along with other spices. With the chili, you can get cornbread, tortilla chips or Fritos. I love cornbread in my chili! One of their specialties is Frito Pie; Chili on a bed of Fritos! They have a few other interesting menu items such as a Texas Taco, Chili Dog, Chili Mac-Daddy, Smothered Fries and Urban Soul Rolls. The Soul Rolls are an “eggroll” with beef brisket, caramelized onions and three cheeses. I had some and they are delicious! I tried a side of fries and they were cooked perfectly! The fries are hand-cut, in-house, every day. They were not greasy and were crisp on the outside and not too heavy.
The hours are Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm, and Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm.
On Tuesdays, they have 1/2 price ribs, while they last. I went last week for the ribs and they were meaty and tender.
