Warriors Earn Top Spot at County It’s Academic Competition

laplatateam2016La Plata High School’s It’s Academic team earned the top spot in the annual Charles County Public Schools competition held Dec. 7 at Maurice J. McDonough High School. It’s the fourth consecutive year the team from La Plata has taken the first place at the Charles County competition.

The La Plata three-member team of Justin Cortez (captain), Michael Gill and James Hume won in the championship round with a score of 330 points against North Point and St. Charles high schools to earn first place. North Point earned second place in the championship round, followed by St. Charles in third place.

Each year, the first-place team goes on to compete in a regional match. The La Plata team will compete against Banneker and George Mason high schools that will air April 8 on NBC4. As the second-place winner in the championship round, the North Point team earned a chance to compete in a regional match that will air next fall.

The Greater Waldorf Jaycees presented the La Plata team with a $500 scholarship for its first-place win. Other student members of the La Plata team include Trevor Jansen (alternate), Alexis Chambers, Zhiqi “Chelsea” Chen, Garrett Cooksey, Mikayla Johnson, Katelyn Kluh, Marian Marteja, Se Eun “Grace” Na, Aashka Patel, Nicholas Shutters, Tyler Simm, Margaret Stine, Jasmine Washington and Omar Yunis. Coaches for the team are John Holmes and Michelle Schoenbauer.

As second-place winners, the North Point team received a $250 scholarship from the Jaycees. Students who competed in the event were Skye Corbin (captain), Nathan Hubbell and Adam Cullen. Other student members of the team are Carl Wachowski (alternate), Andrew Fan and Amara Gammon. The team coach is Deen Stewart.

For participation in the competition, all other high school teams received a $250 scholarship from the Jaycees. The other high school three-member teams were:

Henry E. Lackey High School – Captain Brett Culhane, Shaun Hange and Andrew Wright. Completing this team are Sterling Moorehead (alternate), Alexzandra Bigej and Brittany Culbreth. The team coach is Don Browder.

Maurice J. McDonough High School – Captain Chadeya Miller, Jordan Coley and Michael Fialkowski. Other team members are Denver Bennett (alternate) and Kayla Craig. Courtney Abell coaches the team.

St. Charles High School – Captain Anthony Richardson, Julia Plater and Hunter Donn. Other team members are Robert Frederick (alternate), Eden Lakner, Eve Mondenge, Kennedy Smith, Joshua Ray, Anthony Reed and Shion Thompson. The coaches are Matthew Howard and Charlotte Florea.

Thomas Stone High School – Captain Alexander Trimble, Brandon Hill and Lyndsay Rivers. Other team members are Tanijah Johnson (alternate), Anthony Abarca, Bradley Basden, Vladimir Castro, MariAnne Fleming, Damion Malloy, Devin Malloy, Emily Martin, Justin McLaughlin and Markela Porter. Coaches for the Thomas Stone team are Sara Thompson and Nancy Jeffrey.

Westlake High School – Captain Alitzah Parker, Caitlin Addison and Shayla Herron. Completing the team are Migue Darcera (alternate), Samiatajok “Sam” Adeyemi-Ariori, Nashay Green, Alicia Walker, Megan Carr, Kelvin Fadojutimi, Gillian Gibson and Tapiwa Kaunda. Coaches are Amand D’Onofrio and Natalie Finch.

The Dec. 7 competition will be broadcast on Comcast Channel 96, the school system’s educational television station, and Verizon FiOS Channel 12 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., beginning Dec. 12. The video is also available at ccboe.com/ccpstv under the Special Programs tab.
