UPDATE: Name Released in Suicide at Charles County Jail

UPDATE 7/19/13 5:00pm:
On July 18 at 12:21 p.m., corrections officers at the Charles County Detention Center were alerted of an inmate who hanged himself in a cell. Correctional officers responded immediately and quickly began life saving measures including resuscitation efforts.

The inmate, Benjamin Paul Altimus, 46, of Newburg, was pronounced deceased a short time later.

In accordance with Agency policy, investigators with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division responded and are conducting a death investigation.

Altimus was alone in the cell and there were no signs of foul play.

The Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore will conduct an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.

7/19/13 10:00am:
On July 18, 2013, a man, who was brought to the Charles County Detention Center, for a minor incident earlier that afternoon, died.

The 46 year old male was alone in a cell when Correction Officers discovered him.

The inmate was found hanging in his cell by correctional officers, and was apparently attempting suicide. The inmate was unresponsive and correctional staff immediately began resuscitation efforts. Emergency medical personnel were immediately summoned to the detention center, where he was pronounced dead.
