Striped Rock Restaurant Review

November 12, 2013

Striped Rock005On a quiet fall evening, I took a drive to Solomons to meet with friends for dinner. Now that the summertime visitors have returned to their homes, the island is a much quieter place. The Striped Rock looked like a place to get dinner and parking was plentiful along the boardwalk. I remembered back to a time not long ago when the building housed a noisy nighttime crowd along with food. I was never really tempted to take part of that raucous scene. But now new owners and a different venue – food and drink only.

A wrap around porch was very inviting, with a small patio out front for dining. But due to the chill in the air, this night the inside dining was preferred. Inside was a nicely set up dining room, with a bar on one side and tables on the other. Striped Rock004We were seated promptly, given menus and water. The tables were set with nice white linen cloths. Our waiter appeared and introduced himself and took our beverage order of beer, vodka and grapefruit and the restaurant offers a pumpkin martini so of course we had to have one. He reappeared shortly to tell us he was out of grapefruit juice. So we had to change our order. He brought us our beverages and we had decided to order Crab Imperial Skins for the appetizer. There were three potato skins filled to overflowing with Crab Imperial. We did have to ask for plates for the skins, which our waiter produced. The skins were slightly crisp and the crab was mostly lump meat with the sauce on top. We all agreed they were very good.

Striped Rock001For our entrées we ordered the Steak and Crab Cake Combo, the Filet Mignon and the special Stuffed Lobster Tail with Crab Imperial. A few minutes later our waiter came back to inform us that they had no filet but they had steak strips they could substitute. We decided not to go that way and the Crab Cake platter was ordered with 2 crab cakes and the Filet Mignon was changed to a crab cake sandwich. Our waiter kept apologizing for the shortages.

Soon our entrées came and they smelled wonderful. The stuffed lobster tail was served with a choice of two sides, creamed spinach and house cut fries were chosen. The Crab Cake Sandwich came with lettuce, tomato, and one side. A loaded baked potato was chosen. The Crab Cake and Steak Platter (no steak so 2 crab cakes) was ordered with two sides – Coleslaw and onion rings. The dinners were done perfectly and tasted very good. Striped Rock009The Coleslaw was fresh and crisp, onion rings lightly breaded, crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The creamed spinach was a great choice and the fries were huge. It took a few seconds to decide how to attack the loaded potato but it was awesome. While dining, our waiter appeared with a round of beverages on the house, because of the shortages we experienced, which was very nice.

After finishing our entrées, we asked our waiter what was available for dessert. Everything sounded so good, but we opted for Key Lime Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake and Pumpkin Cranberry Cheesecake. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake was made in thin layers and was very light and had a wonderful flavor of the peanut butter and chocolate. The Pumpkin Cranberry Cake was made with fresh cranberries and with the pumpkin, it was an awesome combination. The Key Lime Cake was made with Key limes, as my guest said there is a difference.

The wait staff was friendly and made sure our water glasses were full. Our waiter appeared several times to ask if we needed anything and if our food was fine. It’s nice to have conscientious servers in this day and age, where everyone is in a hurry and fast food is the order of the day. The décor is very soothing and I am sure during the day, the dining room has a beautiful view looking out on the Patuxent River. It would have been a perfect dining experience had the Filet Mignon been available and the bar had grapefruit juice. Other than that, it was a place worth visiting and returning to again. They have a children’s menu and also offer other dishes and sandwiches besides seafood, such as burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, soups and salads. They are open for breakfast. Reservations and take out available.

To bad they turn away guest around 6:30pm on a Friday.

You’re not the only one to be turned away from this place during the ‘dinner’ hour and trying to eat there.

The one time I went, the waitress brought out the wrong order to me and then insisted that is what I ordered. Tried to speak with a manager but “he was in the office busy doing paper work”. The staff wouldn’t correct their mistake and the manager was not available for comment.

Does this critic ever critisize? I read two major management “Fails” in this review that will keep me from going there.

It is so sad that when asked by a stranger where is a good place for seafood in southern maryland, I did not have an answer.Get your sh!t together people, In this day and age with all the choices for resterants, you need to be over the top with customer service, not having a menu idem is not acceptable. And that crab cake looks sad! Thanks for the heads up review. I wont be going.

i’ve been living here for many many years and i have yet to find ANY over the top seafood rest’s, NONE. And as for the customer service,HA, somd is horrible!!! everyone (most)i have ever had dealings with around here in the food indust seems to have brain damage and believe religiously that you are causing them some great displeasure by patronizing the estab. It is not pleasurable for myself to go out knowing that any place that i choose is going to have bad service and rude employee’s..there are only 2 estab’s i frequent due to those business’s desire satisfy..

I ate there a couple of weeks ago. It was a week night. Several groups at tables eating. The Host seated us to make sure we were comfortable. The server took a while to initially get us our drinks after taking the order but was still a good server. The food was absolutely delicious. I got Salmon and my friend got the lobster. Neither of us had a complaint and we took the leftovers home. The prices seemed great too. No complaints and I would definitely go back!

How the hell are you out of Grapefruit Juice???? That’s a staple item for the bar/drink menu.

No plates for the appetizer at least that was an easy fix…

And then they are out of Filet Mignon.

That sounds like poor management there. Grapefruit juice is an easy fix, run out to Food Lion/Giant and pick up a can or two; While your there, look to see if they have any Filets there also.

So what’s up with the upstairs? Are they refurb’ing it into a better night club?

I have been to this place many times! The service is really good compared to other places on the island. The food has always been excellent!

You can’t tell me that this is the only place that has ever been out of something you ordered. It happens all the time. It’s called the supply truck didn’t make it as ordered or shorted the order.

I have talked to the management at The Striped Rock a few time while I was there, I find it very hard to believe they were too busy to talk to you! They are both very nice people and are working very hard to make the dinning experience everything that it should be!

Well if you look at their receipt they weren’t charged for their drinks. Who the hell runs out of Filet Mignon? I’m allergic to shellfish so I guess my upscale entree selection would of been a no go.

Born and raised on the Chesapeake. 61 yrs old.

I like the food at the Captains Table. Not the fanciest place but my preference for seafood in Solomons. Stick with the local seafood. We haven’t caught a Salmon or Lobster here in a very long time!

I absolutly LOVE the captains table!! I recommend it to anyone passing through or here as a permenent land lubber :)

      • Anonymous on November 21, 2013 at 4:15 pm

The Captain’s Table is awful! Everything comes from a can or a bag. Almost no actual cooking done there!

Do they make Smith Island cakes there? I see one in the picture but nothing about it?

After a recommendation this summer, I was super excited to try out this new restaurant! Unfortunately, the customer service in the first 15 minutes was so bad, I knew I wouldn’t be satisfied with the experience, so we left. After being seated, it took over 10 minutes to be greeted -the place was far from busy… meanwhile we watched the bartender on her phone and other servers hanging out with each other at the end of the bar…definitely won’t spend my money somewhere where I feel like I’m inconveniencing the staff…

Two of us ordered the Fish Tacos. The waitress highly recommended them. “a best seller” Two large flour tortillas with tasteless, shredded cabbage and a few pieces of dry, over cooked rockfish. Supposed to have guacamole but avocado too hard. Should have been informed before we ordered. No compensation. Previous visit, had salmon in sauce that had as much taste as water. Did have a good breakfast. May try again after they start new menu but they have been saying “in two weeks” for months.
