October 30, 2014

Rayletta McWilliamsRayetta Charlotte McWilliams, 84 of Leonardtown died October 24, 2014 at Taylor Farm Assisted Living in Bushwood. Born October 19, 1930, in Franklin County, PA, she was the daughter of the late Merle Leroy Stevens and Rachel Catherine Coyle.

Rayetta married Frederick J. McWilliams in 1950 and came to live in St. Mary’s County. While raising her own eight children, she also gardened, and did sewing and alterations for many people in the community. After her own children were grown, she continued as a child care provider and caregiver for many years. Rayetta was an avid gardener, growing a vegetable garden every year, and she was passionate about her many plants and flowers. She was an amazing cook, and a true artist in creating beautiful needlework; it was rare indeed that you could find her without knitting, crochet, embroidery or quilting project in her hands, and she always had numerous projects going at once. She was generous about sharing her skills and teaching others, and many of her children and grandchildren carry on her love of needlework, cooking and gardening.

Rayetta had a strong sense of civic responsibility and served on the LVFD Ladies Auxiliary, and for many years served as a member of the St. Mary’s County Fair Board, as well as being devoted to her church community.

She is survived by her daughters, Katharine M. Mitchell (Randy); Patricia E. McWilliams; Monica M. Ginese (Gary); Evelyn D. Leland (Dennis); R. Charlotte Callahan (Dan); R. Suzanne Griffiths (Bill); her sons, Frederick “Rick” J. McWilliams, Jr., (Florence) and Michael S. McWilliams; she had 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick J. McWilliams and her grandson, Robert Perry, Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held November 8, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Christ Episcopal Church in Chaptico. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department, the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad or Christ Episcopal Church, Chaptico.
