UDPATE: Firefighter Injured While Battling St. Leonard House Fire

UPDATE: Firefighters in Calvert County on are on the scene of a house fire in St. Leonard at 235 Leonard Court in the area of Maryland Avenue almost directly behind the St. Leonard VFD.

The fire broke out shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Crews arrived on the scene to discover heavy smoke and fire showing through the  roof.

No one was home at the time of the fire. There are reports that the home has been abandoned for close to five months.

During firefighting operations firefighter Michael Montgomery Jr., of the Huntingtown VFD partially fell through the floor causing 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his right leg. He was air-lifted to Med Star and is currently admitted to the Burn Unit. The Chief of the Department, Assistant Chief of the Department and a handful of other members are bedside with Michael Montgomery Jr along with the DCFD Burn Foundation. It is anticipated that in the next few days, Montgomery will undergo surgery and possible skin grafts. The leadership and membership of the Huntingtown VFD ask that you keep the Montgomery family in your thoughts and prayers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
