Thomas More Law Center Files Federal Lawsuit On Behalf of Marine Dad Banned from La Plata High School Property

January 28, 2016

Thomas-More-Law-Center-Files-Federal-Lawsuit-On-Behalf-of-Marine-Dad-Banned-from-School-Property-After-He-Objected-to-Islamic-Indoctrination-of-DaughterThe Thomas More Law Center (TMLC), a national public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, yesterday afternoon, filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of former Marine, John Kevin Wood, and his wife, Melissa, who refuse to allow their teenage daughter to be subjected to Islamic indoctrination and propaganda in her high school World History class.  The lawsuit was filed against the Charles County Public Schools, the Board of Education, and the Principal and Vice-Principal of La Plata High School located in La Plata, Maryland.

The Woods’ daughter was forced to profess and to write out the Shahada in worksheets and quizzes.  TheShahada is the Islamic Creed, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”  For non-Muslims, reciting the statement is sufficient to convert one to Islam.  Moreover, the second part of the statement, “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah,” signifies the person has accepted Muhammad as their spiritual leader.  The teenager was also required to memorize and recite the Five Pillars of Islam.

Charles County Public Schools disparaged Christianity by teaching its 11th grade students, including the Woods’ daughter, that: “Most Muslims’ faith is stronger than the average Christian.”

The Charles County Public Schools also taught the following:

  • “Islam, at heart, is a peaceful
  • “To Muslims, Allah is the same God that is worshiped in Christianity and Judaism.”
  • The Koran states, “Men are the managers of the affairs of women” and “Righteous women are thereforeobedient.”

Read the two exhibits containing Student worksheets here.

The sugarcoated version of Islam taught at La Plata High School did not mention that the Koran explicitly instructs Muslims “to kill the unbelievers wherever you find them.”  (Sura 9-5)

When John Kevin Wood discovered the Islamic propaganda and indoctrination of his daughter, he was rightfully outraged.  He immediately contacted the school to voice his objections and to obtain an alternative assignment for his daughter.

The Woods, as Christians, believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and our Savior, that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, and that following the teachings of Jesus Christ is the only path to eternal salvation.  The Woods believe that it is a sin to profess commitment in word or writing to any god other than the Christian God.  Thus, they object to their daughter being forced to deny the Christian God and to her high school promoting Islam over other religions.

The school ultimately refused to allow the Woods’ daughter to opt-out of the assignments, forcing her to either violate her faith by pledging to Allah or receive zeros for the assignments.  Together, John Kevin Wood, Melissa Wood, and their daughter chose to remain faithful to God and refused to complete the assignments, even though failing grades would harm her future admission to college and her opportunities to obtain college scholarships.

Adding insult to injury, in an effort to silence all pro-Christian speech in her school, La Plata’s principal, without a hearing or any opportunity to refute the false allegations against him, issued a “No Trespass” notice against John Kevin Wood denying him any access to school grounds.

Wood served 8 years in the Marine Corps.  He was deployed in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and lost friends to Islamic extremists.  A few years later, Wood responded as a firefighter to the 9-11 Islamic terrorist attack on the Pentagon.  Wood witnessed firsthand the destruction created in the name of Allah and knows that Islam is not “a religion of peace.”  The school prevented John Kevin Wood from defending his daughter’s Christian beliefs against Islamic indoctrination, even though as a Marine, he stood in harm’s way to defend our nation, and the Charles County Public Schools.

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center, commented: “Defendants forced Wood’s daughter to disparage her Christian faith by reciting the Shahada, and acknowledging Mohammed as her spiritual leader. Her World History class spent one day on Christianity and two weeksimmersed in Islam. Such discriminatory treatment of Christianity is an unconstitutional promotion of one religion over another.”

Thompson added, “The course also taught false statements such as “Allah is the same God worshipped by Christians, and Islam as a “religion of peace. Parents must be ever vigilant to the Islamic indoctrination of their children under the guise of teaching history and multiculturalism.  This is happening in public schools across the country.  And they must take action to stop it.”

The Woods’ lawsuit seeks a court declaration that Defendants violated their constitutional and statutory rights, a temporary and permanent injunction barring Defendants from endorsing Islam or favoring Islam over Christianity and other religions, and from enforcing the no trespassing order issued against John Kevin Wood.

    Good job!

    • anonymous on January 29, 2016 at 2:51 am

Good job to who?; these fools. The Woods, are crazy to even believe, their daughter was being indoctrinated by anyone but them, they are just pure zealot idiots. Fundamentalism is proof that they are the true scared fools.

Act unstable I don’t want you to enter my childs’ school. Way to fear monger, Wood parents, let it go, it’s bs; you acted like a crazy white guy and you were treated like a crazy white guy(and that’s coming from a crazy white guy). Look what happened to the Bundy’s, when they faught the wrong battles, for the wrong reasons.

It’s What Would Jesus Do! not what wood jumps down, Fear mongering and having fear in their hearts has caused this, they need to check their Christianity out because it’s a major perversion of real Christianity.

And what happens when, we all get to heaven and find out all of our Gods are the same God, and these kind of believer are sent to hell for using our Gods’ name that way. Foolish, foolish, foolish. My daughter can learn any religion, as long as she has faith in something, it will better her as a person, period end of story.

In case you haven’t noticed, islamics use terrorism frequently. No other religion does that. I support this families right to reject their daughter having to be subjected to a whitewashed version of this belief, and like most rational people they acknowledge the fact that this belief poses a threat.

      • Darby on January 29, 2016 at 3:10 pm

You, Ms Anonymous are a total idiot if you cant see what is happening in this country. These parents have the right to speak out against public schools brain washing their children with the Islam garbage. Religion should not be taught in public schools at all.

I see you what’s happening in this country by foolish people that in doctorate other, based on their biased & bigoted beliefs, being pushed by likes of Mark Levin, Shawn Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Zealots like Mike Huckabee, religious intolerance is an stupid excuse by self-righteous right-wingers, that’s ruining MY Conservative party. Christianity is based on love, not fear and hate, you can’t be ignorant of that if you been to church (ever or even just once). Stop the stupidity, informed doesn’t come from looking at 1 side of any coin.

No where in the Bill of Rights does it say,

    • Question on January 29, 2016 at 12:13 pm

What ever happen to the legally mandated, by the federal government and the supreme court, of “separation of church and state.” This meant, no more prayers in public schools. No more religious discussions.

      • Keep it real on February 1, 2016 at 12:27 pm

No you are sadly mistaken, discussion is not the same as practicing, but I bet you conflate a lot of things.

I agree with this imposter who’s too dumb to spell my name correctly.

      • Brian on February 1, 2016 at 1:32 pm

You should actually do some reading. That isn’t what it meant at all. Read the original separation of church and state documents.

        • Brian on February 2, 2016 at 6:24 am

Ok my post was actually a setup for Question. There are no founding “documents” that discuss separation of church and state…why? Because the founding fathers didn’t believe in that concept. They actually held long prayer sessions prior to meeting in hopes of keeping civil tongues because they were at such odds over may issues. Separation of Church and State was in a letter written by Jefferson and it was in regards to “policy”. He stated that church policy should not be made by the state and that state policy should not be made in the church. Of course like many other things, it has been distorted and manipulated over the years to fit what people want it mean, vice its actual meaning.

  10. Anonymous on January 28, 2016 at 3:02 pm

So these parents don’t want their daughter to know there are other religions and other cultures in the world? I have no problem with that, it is called home schooling. This way their daughter never has to leave the house and be subjected to Muslims and Jews and the dreaded atheists (oh my). They could also send her to some Christian school. Many of us went to public school and we all learned about other cultures and religion’s. If they think it is brainwashing then they obviously aren’t doing a very good job because last time I checked there were very few Muslims in this county. If they did their brainwashing of their daughter correctly then she won’t be turned to the dark side lol. I do feel bad for this girl, the father is digging a big hole in the sand and forcing her head right into it. Oh well, to each his own.

    • Marc on January 29, 2016 at 1:14 pm

They know about islam. Didn’t you read the part about the father being a first responder to 9-11? besides, Christians are more aware of other religions then most of our snooty atheists.

      • Keep it real on February 1, 2016 at 12:25 pm

And he hasn’t forgiven Islam yet, apparently. His demented world view has encourage the School to show his daughter the other 90% of the story., knowing she lacks the good home to teach from all sides.

I would do the same thing if my children were school age again. It has become a shame that our people have become so sinful that we deny the principals this country was founded on and that as Christians we have lost our right to express our Christian faith in public, ie, prayer in school and in public functions, among others. I absolutely agree with the Wood family and wish them Best Effort in their journey.

Give me a break. A school forcing students to pledge to a religion (yeah right). World history studies all religions from an objective point of view. Subjective sensitive people that cannot handle it should not get an education and apply for government assistance. Woopty doo this guy was in the Marines for 8 years. Many of us have served 20 plus years in the service and supported numerous wars overseas. What does this have to do with his daughter studying different religions and educating herself? Does this mean she has to convert to a different religion? This article is ridiculous and bias. Great job painting a picture of a war “hero” protecting his daughter from the big bad world. I can imagine the ” war hero” acted like an idiot at the school which led to the school issuing the no trespass order.

Horrible reporting. If they are strong enough in the Christian faith why worry about it? Unless the have fragile faith? How can anyone possibly know who a true God is? It’s possible Allah is the same God as another one and visa versa. The burn is with fanatical religion not Islam. Any religion has fanatics. The classic example is killing an abortion Dr. To save a life. Fear is what this is really about.

  24. Opinioniated Mama on January 28, 2016 at 8:49 pm

I think the Woods are right by standing up for what they believe in. I don’t see why the teacher or school didn’t give the daughter a different assignment. Had they done that maybe there wouldn’t be a lawsuit. I don’t understand why religion is being taught in history class anyways when supposedly religion is not allowed in schools.Since it was equal time should have been given to study Christianity as well. They also should have had the children bring home permission slips in order to partipate. Schools have done away with Christmas parties (or they call them holiday parties) in order to keep non Christians from getting offended. Many schools have also done away with the Pledge of Alligence for the same reason so why is it no one took into consideration how people (Christians and Non) would feel about an Islam religion lesson plan. I feel that had this been a two week study of Christianity and a parent contacted the school the situation would have been handled differently. Of course we will never know because no public school would teach about Christianity as they did with Islam. I think if more parents were aware of the Islam assignments you would see the Woods family would not be the only parents not happy about that lesson plan.

    • Keepin It Real on January 28, 2016 at 11:11 pm

Your Christian bias is showing. You’re just like people from other religions that tout there’s is the “one true religion”.

      • Opinioniated Mama on January 29, 2016 at 11:34 pm

It’s funny you say my Christian bias is showing because although I do consider myself a Christian I’m not a bible thumper and to be honest my best friend is gay and I don’t even go to church. I don’t think any religion is better than another because who knows what religion if any is actually 100% in their teachings. Growing up I attended a baptist church but I have been to many other churches. I just call things how I see them. My point was that religion should not have been taught in school in the 1st place considering all that has been done to keep religion out of schools. If they want to teach an overview of all religions to show how they played a part in history then that’s fine but if this article was correct in it’s reporting and there were 2 weeks spent on Islam and only 1 day spent on Christianity then I think that was a bit much. Also I’d like to know if the students were taught about the Jewish faith and other religious beliefs. Your telling me if the students had spent 2 weeks learning about Christianity you don’t think that some parent would have been offended and called the school to complain. I’m pretty sure someone would have and I’m pretty sure the school would have treated that complaint differently. There are just so many double standards in today’s society and it doesn’t matter what you believe or don’t believe there will always be someone who disagrees. I still think that if your teaching about a touchy subject like religion then why not send permission slips home to get parental permission for a student to participate. They send home permission slips for students to take sex Ed in health and also when they are showing certain movies so why not when teaching religion. Then the parents who are offended can opt out and an alternative assignment be giving. That would be way easier than dealing with lawsuits and irate parents.

    • Anonymous on January 29, 2016 at 11:41 am

I think that if you had both sides of the story you would be less inclined to agree with this family. There is no way they were forcing her to worship the god of another religion. The only thing the school was doing is teaching the students about other religions. There are many schools out there that only teach based on the parents specific beliefs, if they are that outraged they need to pull there daughter out of public school and place her in one of these schools. The facts are this father overreacted, angrily made a fool of himself on school property, then got banned from the property. Lastly to the ones saying this country was founded on Christian values, you are wrong. This country was founded on religious tolerance by a group of mostly Protestant followers.

What do Arabic speaking Christians call God? Allah. Know why? Because Allah is Arabic for God. People who claim otherwise are either unfamiliar with the concept of translation or want to stir fear and hate. I’m not sure which.

  26. Michelle on January 29, 2016 at 10:38 pm

This father is a loud mouth bully, and the mother is a drama queen. They have made fools out of themselves and should be ashamed. The class that caused the uproar was a class on MANY different religions. It was not just some random lesson on Islam. I do not believe in observing Islamic holidays or forcing anyone to adhere to their culture. BUT these folks are just seeking attention.

  27. Can think for myself thank you on January 30, 2016 at 1:45 pm

So BAN all Christmas Plays, songs that reference Christmas, Christmas Tress, Christmas Parties in schools, but teach 5 Pillars of Islam. Yep, the Woods are the crazy ones.

Hilarious argument against the Woods Family. Your brilliance in the law is clearly missing.

Your lack of replying properly is astounding.

  28. G on January 31, 2016 at 8:15 am

These people are idiots. Where exactly did those assignments have her pledge to one god and/or shun another? Pretty sure writing down an answer for a question isn’t exactly how belief/faith works. And memorizing the 5 pillars? How awful that must be to learn about something you don’t believe in or care for. I learned about plenty of religions and cultures throughout my years in school(not religous so not exactly something I cared to learn), Islam included. Did it make me a muslim? Absolutely not. I use what I learned about different cultures and societies to understand where people are coming from if/when I interact them and to not be an a-hole when there is absolutely no reason to. I could almost guarantee that those parents are complete douches to anyone different than them, without reason, and they are the prime examples of whats wrong with so many people today.

    • Keepin It Real on January 31, 2016 at 2:55 pm

This story has as much merit as the war on Christmas. Which is about zero.

    • Can think for myself thank you on February 1, 2016 at 9:42 am

Your ability to name call is impressive. Keep up the good work!

      • G on February 2, 2016 at 8:35 am

If you were to read my comment correctly I only actually “name called” once in the very first sentence. I’ll stand by calling them idiots because I think it is pretty absurd that they actually believe a school/teacher/educational system is trying to brainwash their daughter and convert her to a muslim. The only thing that they should be upset about, if anything, is being banned from the school grounds if he came in looking for explanation of the assignment in a reasonable manner. However, I doubt that is the case because why go through that process without good reason. Which is why I said I “could almost guarantee those parents are complete douches” which is just a speculation and not me saying they actually are because I do not know.

    These guys are bigots

  30. Theresa on January 31, 2016 at 10:35 pm

There is a lot of name calling going on here & not much reflection on or understanding of the structure of the lesson plan (which I read all the way through as posted on the Thomas More website).

There is also a complete misunderstanding of Islamic beliefs by my atheist friends and those who believe that actually repeating Islamic tenets is essential to understanding Islam and their cultures.

I lived in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim country in the world. I can assure you that if a MUSLIM is made aware that you have recited the Shahada they consider you a MUSLIM, whether you consider yourself one or not. In Egypt, Christian girls are kidnapped, forced to say the Shahada, and “married” to a “good” Muslim man. They consider this a righteous act for they are saving an infidel from the fire. If the Christian family tries to retrieve their daughter, they are told that she is Muslim now for she has said the Shahada. Her belief in the Shahada is unimportant. She is now MUSLIM.

The assignment clearly states that most Muslims hold stronger religious beliefs than most Christians. Clearly that is bias. What we can say for sure is that fewer Muslims leave their faith in Muslim majority countries because if they do so they are considered apostate and the penalty for being apostate is DEATH. That is in the Qu’ran. There are plenty of stories coming out of Muslim majority countries with examples of just that – people who leave the Islamic faith must either keep VERY quiet about it or flee for their lives.

Finally, anyone who has actually read the Qu’ran (as I have) can attest that Islam is NOT a peaceful religion. There are numerous suras that call for violence against unbelievers. Don’t take my word for it – read the Qu’ran yourself. The oft-quoted 5:32 actually applies to JEWS: “On that account: We ordained for the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL (my emphasis) that if anyone slew a person – unless it be in retaliation for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew all mankind: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all humanity.”)Here is what MUSLIMS must do in the following verse 5:33 – “The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief [undefined] through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter”, Hardly peaceful! Those suras that seem more peaceful are ABROGATED (set aside) by the later Suras of intolerance and undying hatred for unbelievers. Don’t take my word for this – read the Qu’ran yourself:

“O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty.” (9:123)

“Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth [Islam], (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” 9:29 (Jizya is the money that non-Muslims must pay to their Muslim overlords in a pure Islamic state.)

Bin Laden understood the Qu’ran well, saying: “As to the relationship between Muslims and infidels, this is summarised by the Most High’s Word: ‘We renounce you. Enmity and hate shall forever reign between us – till you believe in Allah alone’ [Quran 60:4]”.

Finally, as to whether or not Muslims, Christians & Jews worship the same God, I will say this: I can claim something but that does NOT make it true. Muslims claim to worship the same God as misled Christians and astray Jews but that does not make it true. Simply saying that “Allah” means “God” doesn’t mean that their version of “God” is the Christian or Jewish version of “God”. Muslims call Allah “The Great Deceiver”. This is anathema to Christians whose scriptures say over and over again “Truly, truly, I say to you” and “I am the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life”. John 14:6. Muslims disavow every fundamental Christian doctrine: the Trinity, Jesus as God, God as Man, the Crucifixion & Resurrection. How then can the Muslim Allah be the same as the Christian God?

So before you go bashing this couple for taking a stand, educate yourself in Muslim beliefs & worldview. I can assure you that atheists, homosexuals, polytheists (Hindus), “People of the Book” (Christians & Jews) and any other non-believer will fare very badly under Muslim rule. I wouldn’t be so quick to defend Islam as a peaceful, tolerant, and progressive ideology.

And for those of you who say “Oh, Islam just needs to go through the same type of reformation as Christianity” or “They can change their belief systems as they are more educated and move into the modern world”, THINK AGAIN. Muslims believe that the Qu’ran is the EXACT, UNALTERABLE words of Allah (God) himself. The Qu’ran, and therefore its violent messages, can NEVER be changed. How Muslims can believe this and also believe that Allah could change his mind within the Qu’ran itself (abrogation), in the lifetime of Muhammed, is the paradox of all time. But then, they DO believe that Allah is the “Great Deceiver”.

This is the best example of brain washing I’ve ever seen. Bravo.

      • Keep it real on February 1, 2016 at 12:49 pm

I don’t see you down at the local Amish market helping the poor souls out of Amman’s teaching. Stupid beliefs can always been seen as stupid once a person becomes enlightened, many if not all of American Muslims have been enlightened and won’t highlight or embrace the absurdities of Islam, just as we don’t pile hate on the Amish ways, they shun and hate non-believers all non-Amish, (except maybe Mennonites) we are still called English by them and we’ve been Americans for 230yrs. Your fear of an Islamic United States isn’t anywhere near in the realm of probability, let alone possibility.

        • Theresa on February 2, 2016 at 12:55 am

Rather than indulge in ad hominum attacks and changing the subject, why don’t you actually try to refute an argument? It’s easy – take a sentence or paragraph of a posting & discuss why you think it is wrong. Your example of Amish people slides the discussion away from the original topic which is whitewashing Islam in a forced educational setting. And by the way, while Amish people may insulate themselves from outsiders to preserve their culture, they do not advocate violence against whole classes of people. FAIL. Nor do I propose that this assignment equates to an “Islamic United States” – I merely point out the fallacies of believing that Islam is benign.

          • Keep it real on February 2, 2016 at 6:22 pm

Because you Fail to mention anything good about Islam and are only acting as unenlightened pessimistic person. But when you touch on the Amish of my comments you Highlight and whitewash them. Religious tolerance is the name of the game, change hearts with hope & mutual respect, not from hate & fear and black washing them.

    • anonymous on February 1, 2016 at 3:31 pm

These aren’t the true fundamentals of Christian doctrine: the Trinity, Jesus as God, God as Man, the Crucifixion & Resurrection. Love and peace are, begin to spread it and you will be a happier, more blessful person. They can reject my Christian beliefs and that does mean much to me, but God is watch all his creatures and can cause an anathema on any of them at anytime. Welcome all non-believers, generously give your heart to the Lord and his children, don’t you remember the story of Daniel (Hebrew for God is my Judge).

Why do religious folks always resort to threats when people don’t think like they do? Too damn funny.

  31. cheywolf on February 1, 2016 at 3:34 pm

What a bunch of idiots, 1st commandment states thou shall not put false gods before me, since they are Christian they believe it is a sin. Why is it ok for people to stick up for radical Islam but not Christianity? What a bunch of hypocrites… So they have their own beliefs as you have yours. Get over it, if he doesn’t want his child learning about Islam they should give her another lesson, done and over with. Anyway they shouldn’t teach any religion in school, they got rid of mangers for Christmas, crosses, and prayers so you cant have it both ways.

    • Keepin It Real on February 1, 2016 at 7:58 pm

All religions can go extinct. They don’t serve a purpose anymore. Unless you’re weak minded and need to something to cling onto.

  32. Barry on February 3, 2016 at 2:26 pm

Do they teach Christian History in Public Schools? If so is it done in a neutral manner? Just curious.

I’m gonna try that, only I’m gonna ask all questions in Ebonics, that should provide answers as crazy as all the comments on here! Only in America. Peace to all.

I’m glad this Isis sleeper cell in La Plata HS has been exposed! Seriously now, stop forcing this Muslim BS on our kids and the community. Enough is enough! My thanks to the Woods family for standing up to the CCPS liberal Islamic supporters.
