Patuxent Habitat for Humanity would like to express our gratitude to SMECO for their annual contribution of $2500.00 to our organization. SMECO has been a partner with Patuxent Habitat since 2007 and has been a part of each home we built in both Calvert & St. Mary’s counties. SMECO was instrumental in helping us with incorporating all the LED lighting in our new location. We are very grateful for SMECO’s recurring support. Through financial support, volunteering or add-ing a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.

ABOUT SMECO

SMECO provides electricity to more than 160,000 services in southern Prince George’s County, and in Charles County, St. Mary’s County, and all but the northeast portion of Calvert County. Co-ops are distinctly different from investor-owned utilities because co-ops are owned by their customers, and these members elect the men and women who serve on the Board of Directors.

Co-ops also issue capital credits to their members. What are capital credits? They are the member’s share of the co-op’s margins, based on how much electricity the member purchased and the rate at which the account was billed. SMECO’s mar-gins—revenue less expenses—are used as working capital for new construction and system improvements. When SMECO’s Board of Directors determines that a percentage of the capital credits can be distributed to members through a general re-fund, capital credits will be issued by check or credited to members’ electric bills.

Guess I don’t understand how a non-profit org can donate money.

Our electric bill is already suffering from some fine print charges.

AND I noticed another request for de-reg is pending.

Not that I am against cheritable giving – I am for it.

But unlike most liberals, I like to decide on it myself – not have someone else deciding for me.

    But that’s just me.
