Cruisin’ Southern Maryland Car Show Raises $20,000 for Charlotte Hall Veterans Home

June 28, 2016

2016_Cruisin_Check_PresentationOn June 14, 2016, members of Cruisin’ Southern Maryland for Veterans met at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home to present the proceeds raised during their annual cruise and car show, held Memorial Day weekend.

Through the year-long effort of local car clubs, organizations, and sponsoring businesses, Cruisin’ Southern Maryland was able to donate an unprecedented $20,000 in support of the resident of the Veterans Home!

The funds raised this year will be used to purchase a Diathermy unit for their rehab department, a gazebo for the north resident courtyard, a View & Video magnifier reading system for the visually impaired, and sponsorship of the resident’s summer and winter dinner/dance.

This was Cruisin’ Southern Maryland’s 5th annual cruise and car show in support of Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. The event involves a 100-mile cruise around the Tri-County area, and typically includes over 160 registered classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, as well as a mobile DJ at three stop locations throughout the day.

The cruise ends at the Home with a car show, where residents are able to judge the cars and mingle with participants. Guests are able to participate in a poker run tournament and 50/50 raffle, where most winners choose to donate their winnings back to the Home. Food is provided, along with volunteers to hand out donuts and drinks. A memorial ceremony is held, followed by a balloon release. This year, the residents of the Home presented Cruisin’ Southern Maryland with a plaque in appreciation of all the hard work and dedication of its members.

In the last five years the cruise has raised $60,000 for the Home, enough funds to purchase a new 6-passenger golf cart, a computer for oral history projects, fall-protection rehab equipment, and sponsorship of both our summer and winter proms. In 2013, in addition to the funds raised at the annual cruise, the members of the car clubs came together with local businesses and built a covered pavilion on the south side of the property, valued at over $50,000.

A special thank you to Tyler Raley for catching some neat shots of the show with his drone!
