UPDATE: Federal Postal Service Inspectors Investigating the Desecration of American Flag at St. Mary’s City Post Office

November 16, 2016

Unknown if anyone will be charged

flagUPDATE 11/16/2016: Federal postal service inspectors are investigating the incident. Southern Maryland News Net Spoke with Frank Schissler, Postal Inspector and Public Information Officer with the Washington, D.C., division field office, on Monday, November 14, and again on Tuesday, November 15, Schissler said “Postal inspectors are following up on it,” . He went on to say “No charges have been filed at this time, and I don’t know if anyone will be charged”. On Tuesday, SMNEWSNET spoke with another Postal Inspector who advised us to check back on Wednesday, November 23, for an update on the investigation.

11/14/2016: On Thursday, November 10, 2016 at approximately 8:00 a.m., a 39-year-old Navy Veteran was on his way to work, as he was passing the St. Mary’s City post office he noticed the American flag was at half mast and upside down. He turned around and went back to the post office and discovered the flag was also shredded and vandalized.

The Navy Veteran took down the flag after verifying the post office was closed. He returned the flag to the post office later that day, and they confirmed that it was their flag.

The following statement was posted on Facebook numerous times by the St. Mary’s College of Maryland
On the morning of Thursday, Nov. 10, a vandalized American flag was discovered at the post office in St. Mary’s City. This is a federal matter and St. Mary’s College of Maryland will cooperate fully with any investigation that takes place. St. Mary’s College does not condone the destruction of property. On the evening of Thursday, Nov. 10, a Peace and Unity March was organized by students to bring everyone on campus together as a community.

The vandalism to the flag, and the Peace and Unity March, are two separate events and are not linked in any way. The mission of St. Mary’s College is to create a community dedicated to honesty, civility and integrity and we actively cultivate and promote social responsibility.

The following email was sent out by the St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Tuajuanda C. Jordan President of St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Tuajuanda C. Jordan, President of St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Dear Campus Community,

As “we” as individuals, a community, and a nation reflect on the most recent elections and contemplate the significance of those results on our lives individually and collectively, it is important that we all work in a deliberate manner to respect the opinions of all as well as the property of others. I am very proud of the fact that during this period of reflection and transition, the majority of us has remain faithful to the St. Mary’s Way and has shown respect for each other and for the environment. We must remain committed to this method of engagement as we continue to make progress addressing the challenges we all face.

Unfortunately, the word “majority” does not translate to “all”. The US flag that flies from the flagpole in front of the St. Mary’s City Post Office was found shredded and flying at half-staff on the flagpole on Thursday morning by a resident of the County. We have determined that this act was done by some St. Mary’s College students.

The desecration of the Flag, although appalling to many, is not a crime. It is an act of protest, a form of free speech, which is protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. However, vandalism is a form of protest that we cannot tolerate in our community. Acts of destruction – against people and things – do not move communities forward.

The democratic process is a method by which a country tries to provide a voice for all of its citizens. For the voice(s) to be heard, the citizens must be organized, inclusive, engaged, and focused on the greater good in a civil and respectful manner.

This is an emotional period for us all. Expressing emotion is an essential and healthy characteristic of the human condition. Freedom of expression is part of the American Way but, in a civil society, it should be done in a manner that is respectful of others. That is the St. Mary’s Way.

I wish you all peace and good health.

Sincerely,

Tuajuanda C. Jordan
President of St. Mary’s College of Maryland

I am a Navy Veteran and I hope when the students are found that they are expelled and told to leave out state, Trump supporters are some of the most vile individuals around. hopefully America will crush his movement.

      You sir are a Idiot

      • Anonymous on November 14, 2016 at 2:29 pm

Proper grammar would be: “…are an idiot” Idiot.

        • Steve O'Neil on November 14, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Yes we will call for expelling any one who desecrate the American flag or any property involving the post office or any other church property!

          • Management on November 16, 2016 at 3:07 pm

I’m sorry but that won’t be possible.

Request denied. Further requests will result in increasingly severe consequences. I’m unable to explain further but, for now, WE request and require your patience, complacency and level-headedness while we work to resolve the issue.

Your patience is appreciated, I assure you.

            Respectfully,
            Management

Love how the grammar queens call people stupid and attempt to negate a person’s statement based on a misplaced apostrophe, a missing “n” or something else trivial. Patrick, you are AN idiot.

      • Judy Wentz on November 14, 2016 at 4:34 pm

Yes he most certainly is an idiot. Made no sense at all.

    • Rob on November 14, 2016 at 11:28 am

Surely you are suggesting that a Trump supporter did this are you. Pardon me but it looks like Hillary supporter are the vile ones. They are proving it right now.. Open your eyes and look around.

I to am a Veteran and the parent of a Vet and I agree that they should be expelled.
However, I am not a trump supporter but I know several people who are. They are not all vile people.
None of them would dream of doing such a heinous thing!

    • Rob Stark on November 14, 2016 at 12:16 pm

      Yea Patrick,

That’s who we’re seeing protesting, burning bldgs and destroying things. What world are you living in?

    • Anonymous on November 14, 2016 at 12:46 pm

And how do you know this was the work of a “Trump Supporter”?

    • Hugh on November 14, 2016 at 12:52 pm

I really doubt a Trump supporter had anything to do with this. Are you high?

    • WTF on November 14, 2016 at 1:01 pm

What? I’m willing to bet it was Clinton supporters that did this.

    • Little Dookie on November 14, 2016 at 1:05 pm

I think you have it backwards. The violence that erupted at the Trump rallies were proven to be funded by the DNC. Thank you for your service.

    • JP on November 14, 2016 at 1:30 pm

I would bet it was a Hillary supporter not a Trump supporter. Post election rage.

    • US Army on November 14, 2016 at 1:40 pm

As a US Army veteran of 33 years I seriously doubt that Trump supporters had anything to do with the desecration of the American flag. It’s my belief that only a person with a leftist agenda (Hillary Clinton supporter) would destroy the flag. Have you watched the news lately? Clinton supporters marching in the street rioting and you guessed it burning the flag. Wake up and get your story correct!

    • Debbie on November 14, 2016 at 3:54 pm

You mean Hillary supporters. Trump supporters are not rioting

    • Anonymous on November 15, 2016 at 4:38 am

This article was about vandalizing and your post about Trump Supporters being vile individuals was uncalled for and truly showed your lack of class.

    • Kyle's Roommate on November 15, 2016 at 9:25 am

      I have crippling depression.

    • egark on November 17, 2016 at 11:06 pm

While I do not support vandalizing the US flag, IMHO the use of the term “desecrate” is blasphemy. Only religious objects can be desecrated, and while the flag is worthy of our respect, it is not a religious object.

  2. Rob Stark on November 14, 2016 at 10:30 am

If the vandals have been identified as St Mary’s college students, will their identities be published or will the college keep their identities a secret, allowing them to escape punishment? Will their names be turned over to the proper federal authorities? Will the College be taking any punitive actions?

I’m guessing (and it’s only my guess) that the college will do nothing to shine a light on these criminals. I hope I’m proven wrong in the near future!

    • Tony Stark on November 15, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Our college has an arsonist who burned dorms and apparently a rape epidemic, and the college still does nothing to catch those criminals.

However, if some troll happens to doodle a Confederate flag somewhere, you bet your tush that Tuajuanda is siccing her hounds on that ‘criminal’.

  3. Keepin It Real on November 14, 2016 at 10:42 am

Destruction of government property located on Federal property. Should make an example of these morons… or at least their parents! Make their mommies and daddies pay for the replacement, fines, and bail as well as footing the bill for their education! Spoiled brats! Maybe they should be obligated to 2 years of active military service to repay!!!

    • Nick on November 14, 2016 at 11:38 am

Why should the parents pay for what their children did? Bailing kids out is one of several reasons our society is where it is today.

If the vandals are in fact college students, the majority of them would be at least 18.
They are old enough to vote, and old enough to join the military, therefore they are old enough to pay their own damned fines or face jail.

    • Anonymous on November 15, 2016 at 4:25 pm

Sure, dump them on the military to ‘fix’. Sometimes you can’t fix ‘stupid’.

      • Management on November 16, 2016 at 3:03 pm

No, but stupid people with military training tend to follow clear orders rather well.

You just have to be clear and concise– you know, small words, small concepts, using training to develop muscle memory that allows for reduced contemplation of orders.

Stupid people are excellent fodd– err, I mean an integral part of our armed forces. The great part is the military doesn’t need every soldier to be smart; just to follow orders, for most of them. The smart ones hear from the upper echelon eventually, and then we all work together to keep your best interests at heart.

        Respectfully,
        Management

  4. MarineVet on November 14, 2016 at 10:42 am

It may not be a “punishable” crime if it’s your OWN flag but you cannot destroy other people’s property. Protesting is legal… Destruction of property is not unless you OWN it…

To veteran’s like myself it is a huge slap in the face by those who don’t have what it takes to serve the country they loath so much

    • MarineVet on November 14, 2016 at 10:44 am

Especially on my beloved Marine Corps Birthday!!!

  5. Joe on November 14, 2016 at 10:55 am

It’s destruction of property plain and simple. You can not destroy property that does not belong to you. So the student(s) should be charged accordingly!!!!
It’s that simple. If they want to go to the store and buy their own flag and destroy it, have at it.

I believe that only applies when the desecrator actually owns the flag being desecrated. In this case, the flag belonged to the United States Postal Service…it was official government property. Last I knew it IS a crime to destroy/ desecrate government property.

Why would you want to protect these idiots destroying our flag is beyond me…

  7. Anonymous on November 14, 2016 at 11:00 am

This is a complete lack of respect and morals. These spoiled idiots just spit in the face of everyone who served protecting this flag and our rights. I was not happy with the election results either. In fact I had no love for either candidate but I would never destroy property and insult our country like this. Peaceful protests are everyone’s right given to you by the country these idiots disgraced by destroying this flag. As soon as you destroy property or get violent you crossed a line and should be prosecuted to the fullest. To all the ones currently protesting think of this, there was just as much hate and disdain for Obama due to his extremely liberal viewpoints after he was elected and I don’t remember anyone protesting or vandalizing or becoming violent over that election. I am an independent, both parties equally scare me with some of their policies and beliefs. Maybe the protesters thought it would be Democrat forever or they just don’t understand that not everyone thinks the same way they do but they had 8 years. Now the Republicans have at least 4 years. Everyone check your history books, this is the way it has been since the beginning. Look at it this way, if you work hard, follow the law, and are decent to others you will have a happy life no matter who is president.

Um, everyone is assuming it was college students— there has been no proof or evidence to show that it was, someone is just accusing students of being guilty. This is why we have law enforcement. It could have been some whackadoodle that has no connection to the college whatsoever.

Wrong Susan. As much as I wish it were punishable, it is not. It is protected free speech according to the Supreme Court. Do your research.

Destruction of Federal Property is a crime. The flag was not the property of the vandals. This was a crime which was not stated in the response from the College. I hope this can be resolved and the responsible parties prosecuted.

  14. Anon on November 14, 2016 at 1:14 pm

Remember all of those nasty protests when President Obama was elected? Yeah, me neither.

I find it incredibly hilarious that the people that talk about acceptance have lost their minds, and collectively refuse to “accept” the results of the election. You can disagree with the results, but why is America so weak minded now that losing an election has sparked protests, destruction of the flag, etc.

  15. BornFree on November 14, 2016 at 1:39 pm

Though I have never served in the military, I have supported the Navy as a civilian for 30 years. The act of destructing our flag is deplorable… You want all the rights and liberties that come with it, and yet don’t have the balls to wear the uniform. If you ever did, you would appreciate what the flag means. Free speech or not, if you hate it so fn bad here, leave. A lot of you said that you would leave if Trump won, yet everyone is still here. You won’t be missed and there is a line behind you of others waiting to collect the welfare checks and food stamps. These leftists are protesting what?? The outcome of the election? Didn’t see the right side act like this when the current president was elected. The people have voted; deal with it, just like I have had to for the last eight years.

  16. General question on November 14, 2016 at 1:42 pm

Since this was at Post Office (Government Property) and the American Flag belongs to the Post Office wouldn’t that be considered Destruction of Government Property and the vandals should be charged accordingly?

    • AliceW on November 14, 2016 at 2:26 pm

Yep and the post made by Ms Jordan should be corrected to say it was a crime for the reasons listed above and also remove the rabid comments about the election as there is no obvious connection.

This was meant for the parent comment above

Ok A Rod, now please go away!

    • ASDFGHJKL on November 14, 2016 at 4:15 pm

Yeah this isn’t a racially motivated statement or anything…

      • Kathy Simpson on November 15, 2016 at 7:26 am

Her being a total POS, is not racial, it’s who she is, regardless of her race.

        • ASDFGHJKL on November 17, 2016 at 2:14 pm

I was talking about the purposeful mangling of her name with a demeaning take on a stereotypical black female name. That’s the racially motivated part, obviously.

          • Kanye South on November 19, 2016 at 8:18 am

Cool. But she’s still a POS. Got it!

  19. badb on November 14, 2016 at 7:01 pm

    Ms. Tijuana,
It is a crime to a veteran like me and flying it upside down is deplorable
This county went for trump 60-40. There are many of us veterans here and we pay high taxes. Elections have consequences. Teach that to your sexual history majors and please move your college 50 miles north.

    That college is a Joke!

  21. Deplorable Flag Loving Military Brat on November 14, 2016 at 8:58 pm

Whoever did this must have thought they were so tough and clever to “protest” in this way, yet they don’t have the balls to come forward and own it. What cowards. Everyone on here agrees it was a disgrace…can’t we agree that the party blaming needs to stop, as well, and is completely unproductive? At this point the message has been lost.

  22. Anonymous on November 14, 2016 at 10:30 pm

I think everyone is missing the point here…it has NOTHING to do with who is president next..it has to do with PURE DISRESPECT and IGNORANCE!! I say if you don’t like how the country is being ran you have 2 choices..1. Run for president yourself or 2. Get the F*ck out!!! Don’t go around disrespecting a Flag that represents way more than those with nothing but ignorance and boredom on their hands!!!

  23. TV on November 15, 2016 at 4:11 am

All this discussion about desecrating an American flag, and yet not ONE word regarding patriotism. My apologies to all that have served our country, keeping the freedoms that we so many are now taking advantage of.
The next time you hear “The Star Spangled Banner”….LISTEN TO THE WORDS!

  24. Anonymous on November 15, 2016 at 8:29 am

As this flag was the property and on the property of the United States government this is a federal crime and I hope it to be treated as such

  25. Susie on November 15, 2016 at 8:43 am

Having known several local families who have sent their kids to that college, I would not allow my own kids to go there. They enter as freshman with their own thoughts and opinions, but come out as programmed robots who spout the liberal theology everywhere they go. It’s sad. If you are able to withstand the constant liberal theology, you have to keep it secret because it will effect your grades. No thank you. Not my kids.

  26. Anonymous on November 15, 2016 at 9:57 am

St. Mary’s College is a joke. The sense of entitlement is unreal.

  27. Charles on November 15, 2016 at 11:16 am

Dr. Jordan needs to go, ASAP! She has polluted the minds of our young people long enough. Maybe she can go work for Al Sharpton, or Jesse Jackson. She would fit in nicely with those worthless race baiters.

    • Rod Bishop on November 15, 2016 at 2:13 pm

okay why do you bring the two of them into the conversation? Are you trying to say she is responsible for this? Did she say anything about race? Have you ever spoke with Dr. Jordan? It’s great to sit behind a keyboard and throw bombs at someone you do not know. Get to know someone before you defame them.

      • Charles on November 15, 2016 at 9:18 pm

Had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a SMCM commencement two years ago. Wow! She is really a clueless token. What an embarrassment to the Southern Maryland education community. Please take her back with you to whatever hole you crawled out of. Thanks!

  28. Anonymous on November 15, 2016 at 12:07 pm

The students should be Prosecuted under federal law and not allowed to be hidden by the college!

  29. Bernie Trossbach on November 15, 2016 at 2:22 pm

I have a tall flagpole with American can flag and you are telling me that they can come in and destroy it SMH they might get a bullet up there ass !!

  30. ltowntaxpayer on November 15, 2016 at 3:18 pm

I think the little snowflakes should have their federal college aid cancelled. :)

    • Anonymous on November 16, 2016 at 8:28 am

      That’s not reality.

      • Thomas Paine on November 16, 2016 at 10:11 pm

No, but it’s a great fantasy. Most of those worthless liberal brainwashed turds wouldn’t even make good crab bait, to much soy and yogurt in their diets!

  32. Anonymous on November 16, 2016 at 6:20 pm

probably not a student…. Try the people who work there… JUST SAYING… JK

  33. a on November 16, 2016 at 10:16 pm

I would just like to mention that someone, student or otherwise, should absolutely capitalize on this event and write a best-selling article. This is such a perfect microcosm of the issues our nation is facing as a whole. St. Mary’s is a small island of highly educated, generally economically privileged people from all over the world, afloat in rural America. On the left we have the rich kids who are spending their parent’s money to write poems and drink Boh, and apparently piss on America, and hell, there’s even a highly qualified, well meaning, but much-maligned black president in the mix; and on the right we have that weird but powerful mix of genuine patriots and military, uneducated whites with no future, and even a few alt-right race trolls whose fingers are apparently slipping off the keyboard due to all the drool. The only characters missing right now are the people who believe God is on their side (Left and Right). This is amazing and I am laughing at all of you, but simultaneously lamenting how far up its own ass our country’s metaphorical head is.

    • anonymous on November 17, 2016 at 2:02 am

Too bad st.marys is NOT an island numbnuts….

      • Anonymous on November 17, 2016 at 5:21 pm

Look up the third-to-last word in a’s response. Then re-read the response, I think you’ll better understand it.

  34. A good citizen on November 17, 2016 at 5:39 am

Ms Tuajuanda C. Jordan obviously doesn’t understand the law……theft and destruction of government property (property that is owned by the government) is breaking the law. Condoning that behavior and that act is not representative of a good leader.

    • Robert Burns on November 17, 2016 at 4:58 pm

Tijuana, Tatiana, Timeshara, whatever, should be charged for perpetrating a fraud, specifically, impersonating a college president! Or at least present her with her very own boardgame, “Clue”.

  35. Anonymous on November 17, 2016 at 4:03 pm

    Vandalism is a crime.

  36. badb on November 17, 2016 at 10:04 pm

“No charges have been filed at this time and charges might not be filed”
USG property was damaged and with malice. This talking head sounds like Comey. If a crime was committed and they now who did ot, I demand that person or persons be charged. No politics no protecting the college.
