On Friday, February 9, 2018, at approximately 6:05 p.m., Deputy R. Roszell, of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Mechanicsville Burchmart/Subway, on Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville, for the report of a robbery in progress.

Before arriving to the scene police received information that an employee and three customers had a robbery suspect in custody.

When police entered the store, they located Kottie Deon Fauntroy, 35, of Washington DC, on the ground behind the counter with one employee, and three customers holding him down so he could not leave the store

The assistant manager, and female victim, told police the defendant was standing by the subway counter waiting in line, when he came behind the counter and pushed another employee, the male victim, who was in the lottery register getting change for a customer. Fauntroy started grabbing money from the register when the male employee told the defendant to stop and attempted to pull him away from the register. The assistant manager yelled for help and Fauntroy pushed her back. One customer came behind the counter and grabbed Fauntroy from behind and brought him to the ground. Two other customers then assisted in detaining Fauntroy.

The customers advised that while the Fauntroy was on the ground he kept saying ‘just let me go, just let me go’ and continued to struggle until police arrived. The assistant manager was able to recover the money taken out of the register which was located on the floor and amounted to $260.00.

The male employee told police, he was at the lottery cash register getting change for a customer when he was pushed from behind, he said at first he thought it was another employee playing around and did not turn around. However, once he heard the assistant manager telling the robber to stop, he realized what was happening.

Fauntroy stated he does not know what happened, that he blacked out, he stated he does not know how he got there but believes he was on foot. Fauntroy also told police he was high and took PCP earlier that day and had been drinking as well.

Fauntroy was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he was charged with robbery, theft and two counts of assault.
