Red Ribbon Cutting at SolomonsTown Center Park

November 20, 2011

Tuesday afternoon the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners traveled to Dowell to officially open the new park. It is located next toAnnmarie Gardens and differs from other parks in the county as the fields are set up for junior soccer and lacrosse. The fields can also be quickly converted to full soccer or football when the need arises.  The park contains a storm water treatment pond and a reserved space for later that may become a skatepark or athletic court.

President of the Board of County Commissioners, Susan Shaw, gave a brief overview of the park from when the groundbreaking took place until the ribbon cutting.

The playground, funded by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources with a $200,000 grant, will open in the spring as construction is almost complete. Most of the playground equipment is in place and the workers are installing the final touches.  Walt McKain said irrigation for the fields will be installed as soon as he is able to find the money in his budget and hopefully done by 2012. Lighting for the fields will not be done until 2014 because of budget restraints.
