Tree Committee Meets with LegislaturesMembers of the Maryland Tree Farm Committee were in Annapolis today in celebration of Maryland’s Arbor Day. We kicked off the morning by handing out flowering redbud seedlings to all of the members of the Maryland General Assembly. A great way to remind them of the importance of Maryland’s state and private forests.

Oustanding leaders in the forestry community were honored at the beginning of the legislative sessions in both the House and Senate.

On the State Senate side, Brian Stupak was honored as the Maryland Tree Farm Inspector of the Year. Brian, a MD DNR Forester, works in southern Maryland and has Tree Committeeproudly certified 158 Tree Farms in the state. Brian has consistently been an exceptional forester for the state and was awarded DNR Forester of the Year in 2004.

In the House of Delegates’ chamber, William Bowie was honored as the Outstanding Maryland Tree Farmer of the Year. Mr. Bowie  owns 354 acres in southern Maryland and takes great pride in stewarding his diverse forest, just a few short miles from the Potomac River. Mr. Bowie has owned his forest since 1995 and rapidly earned MD Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year for the first time in 1998. Maryland Tree Farm Committee is proud to honor Mr. Bowie again this year, particularly since the stewardship of his Tree Farm directly affects the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. MD Tree Farm Committee Chair Len Wrabel was there to support Mr. Bowie accept his recognition.
