House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of the 25th World AIDS Day, which is Sunday, December 1:
“This Sunday marks World AIDS Day, when we recommit ourselves to combating HIV-AIDS in America and across the world. While great strides have been made to prevent the spread of this disease and treat those who are infected, we must continue the fight as long as HIV-AIDS continues to affect communities and endanger lives.
“Our commitment to medical research, prevention education, and expanding access to medical treatment remains steadfast, and I was proud to support the reauthorization of PEPFAR earlier this month when it passed Congress with strong, bipartisan support. Through that program and others, the United States continues to play a critical role in halting the spread of HIV-AIDS in Africa and around the world and helping provide life-saving drugs to those in need. As we observe World AIDS Day 2013, let us issue a solemn promise to all those affected by this terrible disease that the global community will not rest until a cure is found.”
