MPD Detective Timothy Francis

Timothy E. Francis was born on March 7, 1970 in Washington, DC to Susan W. Wood and the late James V. Francis, Jr. He suddenly departed this life at his home in Waldorf, Maryland on November 27, 2020.

Timothy “Tim” attended Maryland parochial and public schools. He graduated from Friendly High School in 1988. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1992.

It was always Tim’s dream to follow his father’s footsteps and become a police officer. He started that journey with the Fairfax County Police Department. Shortly after that, he joined the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in 2000. During his 20 years of service, Tim progressed to the rank of Detective last assigned to the Homicide Branch.

During his distinguished career, Tim received many awards and acknowledgements, even commendations from the US Attorney’s Office. Amongst those high honors, he received a Medal of Valor and a Medal of Honor to commemorate his exceptional bravery and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. As a detective, Tim worked on nearly 400 investigations.

Tim joined Ebenezer AME Church on March 19, 1995, where he was a member of the Kingsmen Choir and the Anointed Horsemen Motorcycle ministry.

Tim loved socializing and would never miss an opportunity for a good laugh. He also enjoyed dancing, watching Redskins games, traveling, coaching youth football, and riding his motorcycle. He was a member and road captain of the Flaming Knight Motorcycle Club in Waldorf, MD. He was also a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

To know Tim is to love Tim. He was known for his quick wit and loving spirit. He was a proud and dedicated father. He enjoyed a life rich with family and friends and his love for them was his most cherished possession. He will be fondly remembered and missed by all.

Timothy leaves to celebrate his life and cherish precious memories three sons: TaVon Dakarai, James Timothy and Chase McKinley; two daughters: Ayiana Dashia, Kennedi Lilise; mother, Susan Wood-Francis; brother, Kevin J. Francis; step-mother, Sharon Francis; step-brother, Curtis Plater and step-sister, Ciara Broadus, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends and coworkers.

On Sunday, December 6, 2020, viewing ONLY will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 2294 Old Washington Rd, Waldorf, Md. On Monday, December 7, 2020, viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Temple of Praise Church, 709 Southern Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20032 . Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Rd., Clinton, MD 20735.
