FACTS of CASE: On May 22, 2021, at approximately 11:36 p.m., 18-year-old Jazmiah Zyri Nelson, was fatally shot while riding a four-wheeler with two acquaintances near the 600 block of Pomonkey Way in La Plata, MD.

The group was riding near the townhomes when someone opened fire, striking Jazmiah in the upper body. She was flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma, but tragically passed away.

A second young woman was grazed by a bullet and later released after treatment. Detectives believe someone in the community knows what happened — and your tip could be the key to solving this case.

UPDATE 5/28/2021: Detectives are continuing their investigation into the murder of Jazmiah Nelson who was shot and killed on May 22 in the 600 block of Pomonkey Way in La Plata.

The reward in the case is now up to $7,500 for the tip that leads to the arrest of the suspect(s). Nelson was riding on a four-wheeler with two other people when someone fired a gun toward them. Nelson was struck in the upper body and another person was grazed by a bullet.

Nelson was transported to a hospital but she died a few hours later. Charles County Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $2,500 and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and the La Plata Police Department have each matched the Crime Solvers reward for a total of up to $7,500.

Detectives are still pursuing leads and this does not appear to be a random shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective J. Feldman at 301-609-6474.

5/23/2021: On May 22 at 11:36 p.m., officers from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 600 block of Pomonkey Way in La Plata for the report of a shooting.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim, Jazmiah Zyri Nelson, 18, of La Plata, was on a four-wheeler with two acquaintances when someone fired a gun toward them as they were riding in the area of the townhomes. Nelson was struck in the upper body and flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma where she was pronounced deceased several hours later.

A second female was grazed by a bullet; she was treated for her injury and released.

Detectives are pursuing leads; this does not appear to be a random shooting.
