UPDATE: Occupants and Pets Safe After House Fire in Port Republic, Cause Under Investigation

UPDATE 1/10/2025: January 9th, 2025, at 12:22 p.m., firefighters responded to 4099 Cortona Drive in Port Republic, Calvert County, for the reported structure fire.

Crews arrived on scene to find a Two-story, single family residence engulfed in flames.

Investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is still ongoing. Smoke alarms were present, but did not activate until after occupant evacuation due to fire location.

No injuries were reported. The loss is being valued at over $550,000

Over 50 firefighters responded and controlled the fire in one hour. The fire was discovered by an occupant.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the two adults, two children and three dogs displaced by the fire.

UPDATE 1/10/2025: On Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 12:27 p.m., firefighters from Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s County responded to the 4000 block of Cortona Drive in Port Republic, for the working house fire with animals trapped.

Multiple 911 callers reported fire in the residence with subjects attempting to get the dogs out.

First arriving units found fire showing throughout the 2-story home.

Shortly after arrival, crews had to back out of the residence due to a partial collapse of the home. Incident Command made the decision thereafter to move all efforts to defensive operations due to the integrity within the home. Following this decision, the home completely collapsed on itself, less than 33 minutes after dispatch.

No injuries reported, the dogs were reportedly removed and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, at approximately 12:25 p.m., firefighters and emergency medical services from Calvert, St. Mary’s and Charles County responded to the 4000 block of Cortona Drive in Port Republic, for the reported structure on fire with animals trapped.

Multiple 911 callers reported the house was on fire with subjects attempting to remove animals from the house.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in under 4 minutes to find a 2-story residence with fire showing from the first and second floor.

A working fire dispatch has been dispatched which is bringing firefighters from Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s Counties.

At least one animal was reportedly still trapped. A second alarm has been sounded at 12:40 p.m. The house completely collapsed at approximately 1:00 p.m.

Broomes Island Road at Grays Road and Ball Road will be CLOSED – Avoid the area and expect extended delays. DO NOT RUN OVER ANY HOSE LINES.

The incident has been deemed a defensive operation only due to collapses of the residence and unsafe interior conditions.
