It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing and heartbreaking loss of Tina M. Singer of Hollywood, Maryland. She was 66 years old. Tina is our beloved mother, sister, grandmother (Grandma), partner, and cherished friend. Her sudden and brief battle with cancer came to an end on Friday, February 28, 2025, at St. Mary’s Hospital. For the past 34 years, Tina has resided in St. Mary’s County where she established family roots and deep ties of friendship.
Tina was born on April 24, 1958, in Frederick, Maryland to James King Singer and Mary Lou (Walker) Turfle. She grew up as the youngest of four children. As a result of her father’s employment with trucking companies, she spent her childhood traveling to and residing in a variety of locations such as Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Quebec, and Virginia. When her family returned to Maryland, she attended Westminster High School. Tina marched the 1974 and 1975 seasons with The Hanover Lancers Senior Drum and Bugle Corps. Being the trailblazer that she was, she was one of the original group of girls who joined the Lancers after the corps allowed females to join, albeit only in the flag line. As such, Tina marched the Baltimore, Maryland St. Patrick’s Day parade, which was the first parade the Lancers appeared with an all-female flag line. Tina completed high school early, earning her diploma at 17 years old in 1975; she was very proud of this accomplishment.
After high school, Tina worked at Legetts Department Stores and then climbed the ladder at London Fog in the advertising department. Soon thereafter, she welcomed the birth of her firstborn, a son, and became a mother fiercely devoted to securing a village of family and friends that loved and supported them both. Nine years later she welcomed the birth of her daughter and eventually moved her family to what would become her home for the remainder of her life, Southern Maryland. She used to say, “I’ve lived in a lot of places; there is just something about St. Mary’s County that I love.” Tina was an organ donor and within hours of her passing, she was already giving back to the people in the community she loved. Growing up, her children remember her car karaoke sessions, belting out the lyrics to The Judd’s, Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, Better Midler, and many other female powerhouses. Tina went on to work at Mail America and then The United States Postal Service until she retired in April of 2021. Her children and grandchildren threw her a big surprise retirement party at one of her favorite restaurants, Seabreeze, on the Patuxent River. Throughout her career, Tina was known for her knowledgeable expertise, sense of humor, work ethic, and dependability.
After retirement, Tina decided she was going to live her life to the fullest! She was going to do things the way she liked to do them…”my way.” Tina looked forward to her granddaughters visiting her for summertime “Grandma Camp” and they looked forward to giving her makeovers and eating her big country breakfasts. She adored dinner dates and time spent “catching up” and checking in with her grandson. He adored her infamous and unconventional Fettuccini pasta dish. She spent the last few years travelling, adventuring with or cooking special meals for her significant other, Al, getting together for lunch with her long-time best friends, gathering in many social circles, attending concerts, and she loved to go for rides in the open air on the back of a motorcycle or in a boat! She is remembered for her witty one-liners, tight hugs, great laugh, and her fiery, independent spirit.
Tina was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lou Turfle, who she had just lost only eight days before she passed. Tina passed on the morning of her mother’s funeral, surrounded by her own children after a hospital slumber party with her daughter. She was also preceded in death by her sister Pamela Singer Vickery.
Tina is survived by her father, James Singer (Jan); her sister, Terri Laforest (Gabe); her brother, Steve Singer (Carol); her son, C. Brandon Wehler (Erin); her daughter, Amanda Grambo (Buzz); and her three grandchildren, Brandon M., Ginger, and Cider Wehler.
Tina is also survived by individuals she grew very close with over the last few years such as her significant other, Al Graves, his daughter Robin Gates (Jp), his son Corey Graves, his grandchildren, Hope and Faith Copsey, and last but certainly not least, her most unexpected but faithful sidekick, his dog Huzzy.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in her name may be made to either of the following organizations: The Postal Employees’ Relief Fund (PERF) or locally to The St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen of Great Mills, Maryland.
