A coordinated effort between a local resident, animal control officers, and emergency responders led to the successful rescue and reunification of a 13-year-old dog in Calvert County.
According to the Calvert County Animal Shelter, Animal Control responded to a report of a dog trapped deep in marsh mud. Before responders arrived, a quick-thinking citizen was able to free the animal, later identified as Bella, but recognized she required immediate medical attention.
Upon arrival, Animal Control Officers Limerick and Bell-Bussler found Bella cold, shaking, and unable to stand. With assistance from the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department, crews safely moved the dog to stable ground.
Bella was transported to the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter, where veterinary staff treated her for hypothermia and closely monitored her condition. During her recovery, a shelter volunteer remained by her side to provide comfort.
Officials confirmed that Bella’s owners were later located, and she has since been reunited with them. She continues to receive veterinary care at home, with expectations for a full recovery.
Shelter officials credited the successful outcome to the combined efforts of the citizen who initially intervened, animal control officers, emergency responders, and shelter staff and volunteers.
