Andrew Bowie McCoy, 27, of Indian Head, is facing charges of loaded handgun in a vehicle and second-degree assault following an alleged road rage incident in La Plata, according to court documents.

The charges stem from an April 4, 2026 incident at the intersection of Crain Highway and Hawthorne Road in Charles County. According to charging documents, an officer with the La Plata Police Department responded to reports of “an armed road rage incident involving handgun.”

Court records state that the adult male victim reported being involved in a road rage encounter while stopped in a northbound left-turn lane. The victim told police that during the incident, McCoy “opened the center console of his vehicle and pulled out what he believed to be handgun and told him that he would kill him.”

The victim further told officers “that he was scared for his life” and indicated he was willing to pursue charges.

According to the statement of probable cause, McCoy then drove away from the area, heading west on Hawthorne Road. Officers later located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near Hawthorne Road and Miller Hill Road with assistance from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Police reported that McCoy admitted there was a handgun inside the vehicle’s center console. The firearm, identified as a Springfield XD handgun, was recovered and secured. Authorities also noted that McCoy “is not a wear and carry permit holder in the state of Maryland.”

After being transported to the Charles County Detention Center, McCoy was advised of his rights. According to court documents, he told officers “that a road rage incident did occur but that he did not ever pull the handgun out of the center console.” He also stated he did not have a permit and was “not coming from, or on the way to the shooting range.”

McCoy was initially held without bond following his arrest on April 4, 2026. After a bail review hearing on April 6, 2026, a judge ordered his release on his own recognizance.

A court date in the case is scheduled for May 19, 2026 in the District Court for Charles County.
