UPDATE: Great Mills High School Incident Results in Student Charged – No Weapon, No Threat Found

UPDATE 4/15/2026: At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office received a tip indicating a student had reported seeing another student in Great Mills High School with a firearm.

Authorities immediately notified the Great Mills High School Resource officer, who then requested additional law enforcement support. Within minutes, school administrators initiated safety protocols, and additional deputies arrived on scene and began an investigation.

A 17-year old male suspect was identified. School administration and officers performed a search of the suspect’s person and belongings. During the search, a firearm was not found; however, alcohol and marijuana were located.

The suspect will be charged with the following:

  • Disruption of School Operations
  • Possession Of Cannabis By A Person Under 18
  • Possession Of An Alcoholic Beverage By A Person Under 21

Law enforcement agencies are prohibited from publicly identifying juveniles due to legal protections that safeguard their identities throughout the judicial process.

School safety remains a top priority with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, and the prompt report of suspicious activity allowed deputies to resolve the situation quickly and safely.

UPDATE @ 11:40 a.m.: Additional details have been released by both the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Great Mills High School regarding the incident earlier today.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, deputies increased their presence at the school as a precaution while investigating a tip received from a community member. Authorities have confirmed there is no indication of any threat to students, staff, or the public at this time, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

School officials provided further clarification, stating the incident began around 10:30 a.m. when a report was made that a student may have been in possession of a firearm inside the building. Out of an abundance of caution, the School Resource Officer requested additional law enforcement support.

The student identified during the investigation was found not to be in possession of any weapon, and officials confirmed the report originated from a caller later identified as a female student from North Carolina.

During the investigation, the school implemented a Secure Hold, temporarily restricting student movement while classes continued as normal. The hold was lifted around 11:15 a.m., and students resumed their normal schedule.

School officials also noted an unrelated medical emergency occurred at the same time, requiring an ambulance response. The student involved is reported to be doing better.

Dispatch advised units that a caller reported a student may be armed with a gun.
