The Maryland State Police Aviation Command is actively recruiting a full-time Aviation Maintenance Technician to support Trooper 7, based at St. Mary’s County Regional Airport.

Trooper 7 remains the busiest medevac base in the state, leading the Aviation Command in 2025 with nearly 500 missions —most occurring across Southern Maryland. The pace has continued into 2026, with crews completing approximately 100 medevacs during the first quarter alone. Historically, the first quarter is the slowest period, with call volumes expected to rise as warmer weather brings increased outdoor activity.

Officials say the Aviation Maintenance Technician—commonly referred to as a helicopter mechanic—is a critical part of the operation.

While not involved in flight responses, the technician ensures the aircraft is mission-ready at all times. Duties include daily inspections, routine maintenance, and minor repairs performed at the hangar located at the county airport. Larger inspections and major repairs are handled by personnel at the Aviation Command’s headquarters at Martin State Airport in Middle River.

Currently, maintenance coverage for Trooper 7 is being supported by technicians from Trooper 2 and headquarters staff. Officials emphasize there is no impact to response times, but having a dedicated technician assigned locally would significantly improve efficiency and aircraft availability.

The Aviation Command is encouraging qualified candidates—particularly those in the Southern Maryland region, including individuals connected to NAS Patuxent River or Webster Field—to apply.

Applicants are also invited to visit Trooper 7 in person to meet pilots and flight paramedics, tour the aircraft, and learn more about the mission.

Officials highlight the importance of the role, noting that every successful medevac flight depends on the readiness of the aircraft.
