The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has announced the retirement of Sergeant George Higgs, marking the end of a law enforcement career spanning 28 years and nine months.

Sergeant Higgs began his career with the agency in August 1997 as a Corrections Officer. He later transitioned to Patrol before spending nearly 15 years as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). Over the course of his career, he advanced through multiple leadership roles, including Patrol Sergeant and CID Sergeant. Most recently, he served as a Sergeant in Standards and Inspections within the Office of Professional Responsibility.

In addition to his primary assignments, Higgs held a wide range of specialized roles throughout his tenure. These included positions on the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Emergency Services Team (EST), serving as an EST Sniper, Polygraph Examiner, Sex Offender Registry Coordinator, and Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operator.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Higgs received several awards during his career, including multiple Meritorious Service Awards for his actions during high-risk barricade incidents that resulted in safe outcomes. In 2018, he was also recognized with both the CCSO Meritorious Service Award and the U.S. Department of Justice Missing Children’s Child Protection Award for his involvement in a major investigation.

Reflecting on his career, Higgs said he was grateful for the experiences and relationships built over nearly three decades of service.

“I have countless fond memories from the past 28 plus years. I am thankful for the relationships I developed over the years and the opportunity to assist the citizens of Charles County,” Higgs stated.

In retirement, Higgs plans to spend more time with his wife, two daughters, and extended family, as well as pursue hobbies including fishing, golfing, and woodworking.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office thanked Sergeant Higgs for his service and recognized his contributions to the agency and the community.
