Adam McKinley Washington, 32, of Waldorf, is facing a misdemeanor theft charge after an alleged shoplifting incident at a retail store in Waldorf on April 7, 2026.

Washington is charged with theft less than $100.00 following the incident, which was investigated by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

According to charging documents, the incident occurred at a Target store on Western Parkway in Waldorf. A responding officer wrote, “On 4/7/26 at approximately 0933 hours, I was dispatched to Target located at 3300 Western Pkwy, Waldorf, Charles County, Maryland for the report of shoplifting in progress.”

Loss prevention staff at the store reported observing a man matching Washington’s description. The officer stated, “Loss prevention provided a description of a black male wearing all black, carrying a white backpack and a blue hat.”

According to the statement of probable cause, store personnel saw the suspect conceal merchandise. The report states, “Loss prevention observed the accused place food and hygiene items into his pockets and backpack. The accused passed all points of sale without rendering proper payment.”

After leaving the store, the suspect allegedly ignored attempts to stop him. “After exiting the store, loss prevention attempted to stop the accused, who ignored them. The accused fled the scene on foot,” the officer wrote.

Law enforcement later located a person matching the description nearby. The officer stated, “I located the accused walking out of the Target parking lot and heading north on Western Parkway. I detained the accused and transported him back to Target where his identity was confirmed by loss prevention.”

Investigators also reported that Washington initially provided a false name. “The accused provided his name as Josh Washington, which was determined to be a false name,” the report states.

Authorities later confirmed his identity through identification and database records. The officer wrote, “The accused’s expired Missouri driver’s license provided the name Adam McKinley Washington which was determined to be the correct name by his own admission in comparison to the Charles County local database.”

The items taken were recovered at the scene. According to the report, “The stolen items were recovered from his pockets and backpack. The total value of the items is $43.87.”

Washington was taken into custody following the incident. “The accused was transported to the Charles County Detention Center for processing,” the officer stated.

Court records show Washington was initially held without bond on April 7, 2026. Following a bail review hearing on April 8, 2026, a judge ordered his release on personal recognizance.

The case remains open in the District Court for Charles County, with a trial scheduling hearing set for May 22, 2026.
