Davin James Sater, 22, of Mechanicsville
Davin James Sater, 22, of Mechanicsville, has been charged with felony motor vehicle unlawful taking following an investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office into a vehicle reported stolen from Virginia.
According to court documents, deputies responded on April 20, 2026, to Michelle Court in Mechanicsville for what was initially classified as a civil matter. Court records state that Sater contacted emergency communications because he was concerned that a vehicle he had been operating may have been reported stolen in King George, Virginia.
Deputies located Sater and a silver 2017 Chevrolet Malibu bearing Virginia registration at the residence. Authorities confirmed through emergency communications that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of King George, Virginia. The vehicle was registered to an adult female victim identified in court documents as Sater’s ex-girlfriend.
Charging documents allege that Sater “did unlawfully, knowingly, and willfully take out of [the victim’s] lawful use” the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu without consent.
According to the statement of probable cause, Sater told deputies he had been allowed regular use of the vehicle for approximately a year and claimed he and the victim had arranged for him to purchase it. Court records state Sater told deputies he had not yet been able to buy the vehicle because “tax money” had not arrived in his account. He also allegedly stated that the victim “was not being cooperative in arranging a return of the vehicle.”
Deputies reported that Sater had personal belongings, two keys to the vehicle, and the title while the vehicle was parked at his residence.
Sater was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he was charged with motor vehicle unlawful taking.
Court records show Sater was released on personal recognizance following his initial appearance on April 20, 2026. Conditions of release include appearing in court, not engaging in criminal activity, and coordinating with King George, Virginia law enforcement regarding return of the vehicle.
