James Dickerson, 32,  and John Garner Fenwick III, 39, both of Mechanicsville, were arrested following a traffic stop in Mechanicsville on April 24, 2026, and now face multiple drug and traffic-related charges in St. Mary’s County District Court, according to court documents.

Deputy Joseph Senatore of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office stated in charging documents that he was traveling on Old Village Road near Mechanicsville Road when he observed a gray Honda Odyssey allegedly cross a double yellow line and pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was later stopped at DJ’s One Stop on Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville.

According to court records, Fenwick, who was identified as the driver, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance not cannabis, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired, reckless driving, negligent driving, driving on a suspended and revoked license, unsafe lane changing, passing in a no-passing zone, failure to drive right of center, driving without a valid license, and additional traffic violations.

Court documents state that Deputy Senatore observed “an abundance of white powdery substance” on the center console in plain view and identified it as cocaine. The deputy also reported seeing loose copper brillo inside the vehicle, which he described as paraphernalia commonly associated with crack cocaine use.

According to charging documents, Fenwick allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol during the stop, telling deputies, “I can’t give you an amount, but I’ve had a little bit to drink.” The documents further state that Fenwick later said, “I know what’s going on right here, so go ahead and do what you have to do to me.”

Investigators reported recovering a trace amount of cocaine from the center console area between the driver and passenger seats. Deputies also alleged that Fenwick showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing and later refused to complete additional testing.

Dickerson, who was identified as a rear-seat passenger in the vehicle, was separately charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance not cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to court documents, deputies searched a white purse located on the rear floorboard near Dickerson’s seat and allegedly found three improvised glass smoking devices containing cocaine residue along with approximately .5 grams of suspected crack cocaine inside a green rubber container.

Both men were released on their own recognizance following initial appearances before a District Court commissioner.

Court records show Dickerson was later deemed eligible for representation by the Public Defender’s Office.
