Michael Thomas McHutchison, 36, of Lusby
Michael Thomas McHutchison, 36, of Lusby, has been charged with failing to obey a lawful order, disorderly conduct, arson threat, threat of mass violence, and resisting arrest following an incident on April 30, 2026, in Lusby, according to court records filed in Calvert County District Court.
According to charging documents, deputies with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at approximately 7:59 p.m. to Ranch Liquors at Lusby Town Square Shopping Center after receiving reports of an intoxicated man allegedly harassing patrons and attempting to get people to drink alcohol. The caller reportedly described the man as wearing a cowboy hat, barefoot, and with a bandana hanging from his back pocket.
Court records state Deputy H. Wilder arrived at the shopping center and spoke with a caller, who told deputies the man had walked behind the building. Deputies searched the area and later saw McHutchison walking along Gunsmoke Trail near Long Bow Court. According to the probable cause statement, McHutchison was allegedly walking on the edge of the roadway “right on top of the white line,” causing passing vehicles to swerve around him to avoid striking him.
Deputies stated they recognized McHutchison from prior calls for service at his Rawhide Road residence. The probable cause statement alleges deputies were aware of previous incidents involving his mental health and noted there had been “numerous calls for service involving him.” The report further states that his “mental well being has been slowly degrading but he does not seek help.” According to the deputy, McHutchison had previously been the subject of a court-ordered emergency petition that allegedly resulted in a use-of-force incident when police attempted to serve the petition. The report also stated that his wife had previously filed an emergency protective order involving custody of their children.
According to court documents, deputies called out to McHutchison and asked if he was okay, and he allegedly responded “yes.” Deputies then asked whether he lived on Rawhide Road, and he again allegedly replied “yes.” McHutchison reportedly asked deputies for a ride. Deputies instructed him to cross the road so they could speak with him safely, but the report states he stopped in the middle of the roadway and asked deputies “if I was demanding him and if that’s where I wanted him.” Deputies told him, “no, come all the way across to this street.”
The probable cause statement says McHutchison was carrying a bag containing a bottle of Coke, a smaller liquor bottle, a clear bag with what deputies believed were grass clippings, a large book, and what initially appeared to be a fishing rod but was later identified as a long tree branch. Deputies then asked whether he had argued with anyone at the shopping center. According to the report, McHutchison replied that “he had words for me.”
Deputies alleged McHutchison then asked one deputy, “if I watch porn,” before allegedly calling the deputy a “porn watcher” while pointing the tree branch toward the deputy’s face. The report states the branch came within approximately one foot of the deputy’s face. Deputies instructed him to put the stick down, but according to court records, McHutchison repeatedly asked officers if they were “going to shoot him” and allegedly told deputies numerous times to “shoot him.”
According to deputies, McHutchison repeatedly moved toward officers in an aggressive manner, forcing deputies to place their hands against his chest to keep him from getting too close. Deputies stated McHutchison accused them of “pushing him and harassing him,” while allegedly standing taller, clenching his fists, and continuing to raise his voice despite officers attempting to calm him down. The report states McHutchison then told deputies “f##k you” before beginning to walk away.
Deputies ordered McHutchison to “go home and stay on the side of the road,” according to the statement of probable cause. The report states McHutchison immediately turned around and approached deputies again while allegedly yelling, “you go home you ni##er.” Deputies reported they again attempted to keep him from getting into their faces. The report states McHutchison then turned toward Sgt. Durner and repeated the same statement before once again telling deputies to “shoot him.”
Court records allege McHutchison continued moving aggressively toward deputies while shouting, “are you going to shoot me, f##king push me!, f##king hit me again!” Deputies reported he was “actively pushing into me” while yelling. According to the probable cause statement, deputies then took him to the ground and attempted to place him under arrest while passing traffic slowed to watch the incident.
Deputies stated McHutchison resisted efforts to place him in handcuffs and allegedly screamed while striking his own head on the ground during the struggle. Officers later observed a cut on his forehead that they believed occurred when he hit his head on the pavement. Deputies attempted to ask if he wanted medical treatment, but according to the report, he instead began “talking about Jesus and calling us nazis.”
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office contacted detention center medical staff before transporting McHutchison to the jail. Deputies reported the entire ride to the detention center involved McHutchison “screaming, kicking the cage, calling me ni##er, calling me nazi, calling me pig among numerous other insults.”
According to court documents, detention center medical staff directed deputies to first take McHutchison to Calvert Health Medical Center for evaluation. While at the hospital, deputies alleged McHutchison became “belligerent numerous times” with deputies and stated he was “going to burn down the hospital with everyone in it.” Those statements resulted in charges of arson threat and threat of mass violence.
Court records show McHutchison was released on his own recognizance following an initial appearance on May 1, 2026. As part of his release conditions, the court ordered him to complete an evaluation with Calvert Behavioral Health and follow all recommendations.
