Anthony M. Barnes, 45, of Lexington Park, is facing misdemeanor charges of theft of $100 to under $1,500, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance other than cannabis after a May 26, 2026, Walmart shoplifting investigation in St. Mary’s County, according to District Court records.

Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Walmart at about 12:37 p.m. on May 26, 2026, for a reported shoplifting.

A store asset protection employee told deputies that at about 6:12 a.m., two men entered the store, selected merchandise and placed items in a cart before leaving through an entrance-only gate without paying.

The items stolen were listed as a Razor E90 scooter valued at $124, a Segway electric scooter valued at $198, and a Shark vacuum cleaner valued at $274 as stolen, with the reported completed loss listed as $631.76. Court records also say a vacuum and a red 28-quart cooler were left in the cart after passing all points of sale, bringing the total reported loss and attempted loss to $946.24.

According to the statement of probable cause, an employee attempted to stand in front of the defendants as they left, but they moved around the employee and entered a silver vehicle with a damaged rear windshield. Later that day, at about 2:12 p.m., a lieutenant stopped a vehicle matching that description on Point Lookout Road in Leonardtown. Barnes was identified as a passenger in the vehicle, and court documents say he was wearing blue pants and a red Champion-branded shirt.

The driver told deputies the vehicle had been at Walmart that morning and said her boyfriend had been operating it, according to court records. The documents state that the driver consented to a search of the vehicle. Deputies reported finding a red jacket in the backseat area where Barnes had been sitting, which they said matched clothing used in the theft.

After Barnes was placed under arrest, deputies said they found a glass cylindrical smoking device in his left pocket and a thin rod in his right pocket. The charging documents describe the glass device as containing black burnt residue suspected to be crack cocaine.

Barnes was taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center and charged in the Walmart case with theft of $100 to under $1,500, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance other than cannabis. Court records show a commissioner found probable cause on all three charges on May 26, 2026.

At his initial appearance later that evening, Barnes waived an attorney for that hearing only, according to court records. A commissioner ordered him released on a $5,000 unsecured personal bond with conditions that he appear in court, not engage in criminal conduct, stay away from Walmart on Miramar Way in California, and abstain from alcohol or the misuse or possession of controlled substances without a prescription.

The initial appearance report also notes prior convictions, prior failures to appear, pending cases and probation or parole status.

Barnes is scheduled for a court date in the Walmart case at 1:30 p.m. on July 21, 2026, in Courtroom 1 at St. Mary’s District Court. Court docket entries show the bond was posted on May 26, 2026, and that the Public Defender’s Office entered an appearance on May 27, 2026. The case remains open.

The Walmart case is one of several recently filed St. Mary’s County District Court matters involving Barnes. In a separate case Barnes is charged with two counts of theft of $100 to under $1,500, one count of theft under $100, and one theft scheme count of $100 to under $1,500 tied to alleged incidents at Kohl’s on Lexington Village Way in Lexington Park between May 3 and May 17, 2026. Court documents allege the total value of merchandise stolen across those incidents was $612.97, including clothing, jewelry, socks, shorts and other items.

In that Kohl’s case, Deputy Estrada Lora wrote that video surveillance and store records showed three separate incidents. According to the application for charges, the May 17 incident involved items totaling $342.98; the May 3 incident involved a pink Tek Gear jacket valued at $34.99; and the May 8 incident involved earrings and Nike clothing totaling $235. The filing says a St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office crime analyst helped identify Barnes through a Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration check.

Barnes also faces two separate theft-under-$100 allegations connected to Weis on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park. Court records allege he stole two ribeye steaks valued at $39.12 on March 29, 2026, and two family packs of ribeye steaks from the same store on March 26, 2026.

In the March 29 Weis case, a store complainant told deputies that surveillance video showed a man later identified as Barnes entering the store, walking toward the bathroom area, then going to the meat section and concealing two steaks under his sweatshirt before leaving without paying. In the March 26 Weis case, a store complainant told deputies the same person had been involved in “numerous other incidents” at the store, according to the charging application. The documents say Barnes was identified through MVA photo comparison and information developed by deputies.
