Jykiel Eugene Barnes, 26, of Upper Marlboro
Jykiel Eugene Barnes, 26, of Upper Marlboro, has been charged with failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order from law enforcement and resisting or interfering with an arrest after a June 6, 2026 traffic stop in Prince Frederick during which deputies reported finding a loaded rifle inside his vehicle.
According to court documents, a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy reported seeing a white 2017 Mercedes-Benz 300 series traveling southbound near Solomons Island Road and Dares Beach Road at about 1:35 p.m. The deputy said the vehicle was missing a month registration tab, did not have a front tag displayed, had blacked-out taillights and appeared to have dark window tint. Another deputy initiated a traffic stop near Solomons Island Road and Main Street, and the vehicle continued until it stopped at the south entrance of the Prince Frederick Walmart.
Deputies identified the driver as Barnes. While speaking with him, deputies said the front windows were heavily tinted, and one deputy asked Barnes to roll down the passenger-side window. From the passenger side of the vehicle, a deputy reported seeing a rifle stock on the floorboard and the silver tip of a rifle barrel under a black puffer jacket.
After the rifle was spotted, deputies ordered Barnes multiple times to step out of the vehicle, according to the allegations. Deputies said Barnes refused, and one deputy reached into the vehicle to unbuckle his seatbelt and grab his arm. Another deputy grabbed his other arm because Barnes was “tensed up” and providing what the deputy described as passive resistance. Barnes was then removed from the vehicle and arrested.
Deputies reported recovering a loaded Bear Creek Arsenal BCA15 .556 rifle from the passenger-side floorboard. The rifle had 26 rounds in it, and deputies said a search of the vehicle also turned up three additional magazines, one of which contained 16 rounds, along with an additional rifle stock. The rifle, ammunition and magazines were placed into property storage.
The charges listed against Barnes in this case are failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order from law enforcement and resisting or interfering with arrest. The filing states that possible charges related to the rifle were pending further review with the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office. The charging summary lists the maximum penalty for failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order as 60 days and/or a $500 fine, and the maximum penalty for resisting or interfering with arrest as three years and/or a $5,000 fine.
Barnes was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center without incident, and the Mercedes-Benz was towed.
Barnes was initially ordered held without bond on June 6, 2026, after a judicial officer found a reasonable likelihood that he posed a danger to the safety of an alleged victim, another person or the community. He waived an attorney for the initial appearance only. At a June 8, 2026 bail review, Barnes was released on recognizance with conditions that he not engage in criminal activity and appear in court as directed.
