The La Plata Police Department will conduct a multi-jurisdictional sobriety checkpoint on Thursday, June 18, 2026, within the Town of La Plata as part of an effort to reduce alcohol- and drug-impaired driving.
The initiative is supported in part through grant funding from the Maryland Highway Safety Office. Police said the checkpoint is intended to encourage sober driving and prevent crashes linked to impaired drivers.
According to information provided by the department, Maryland sees an average of about 7,800 impaired driving crashes each year involving alcohol and/or drugs. Those crashes result in approximately 4,025 injuries and about 170 deaths annually statewide.
Officials are reminding drivers that there is zero tolerance for driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
“If you drink, please don’t drive,” police said. “It’s not worth the risk to your life or the life of another. There is no substitute for sobriety when behind the wheel.”
Police urged anyone who plans to drink or use drugs to arrange a sober ride, use a rideshare service, or make other plans before getting behind the wheel.
