Walter Jay Brown Jr., 47, of Leonardtown, was charged in two separate 2026 St. Mary’s County arrests, including a March second-degree assault case that has since been closed and a June controlled substance possession case that remains open.

The first arrest followed a reported disturbance on March 15, 2026, at the Island Inn and Suites on Piney Point Road in Piney Point. According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded after the communications center reported that a loud disturbance could be heard over the phone, but dispatchers were unable to obtain more information. When deputies arrived, they contacted several people in a hotel room, including Brown and an adult female victim identified as his wife.

Brown allegedly told a deputy he had returned to the hotel from McDonald’s and entered the bedroom, where he approached the adult female victim while she was asleep. He said he saw an imprint in her bra that he believed was a “crack pipe” and said he was frustrated because he had learned the previous day that she had allegedly been smoking crack. Brown allegedly said he tried to take the suspected item, and that the situation became physical, though he did not specifically say he assaulted her.

The adult female victim told deputies she woke up to Brown trying to reach into her bra and described his actions as “trying to rip her shirt off.” She said she rolled onto her stomach to prevent her shirt from being ripped and held her hands underneath her. She told deputies Brown got on her back and applied pressure to the back of her neck with his hands.

The victim also reported that after she got Brown off her and stood up from the bed, Brown struck her in the ribcage with a closed fist. She then left the bedroom and called 911. A deputy reported seeing redness on the front and back of her neck, including an area on the back of the neck described as consistent with pressure from Brown’s thumb.

Brown was charged with second-degree assault. He appeared before a judicial officer on March 16, 2026, and was released on a $2,500 unsecured personal bond with conditions that he not engage in criminal activity and appear in court as directed. The case was later closed after the charge was placed on the stet docket on April 16, 2026, before Judge James Tanavage. The bond was released on April 21, 2026.

The second arrest occurred on June 26, 2026, after a deputy with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office reported finding Brown in the parking lot of the Super 8 hotel on Three Notch Road in California. The deputy said Brown had an active Maryland State Police warrant for failure to appear in a driving-without-a-license matter.

As the deputy approached Brown to take him into custody on the warrant, Brown allegedly tried to pull a plastic tie-off baggie from his left shorts pocket. The deputy wrote that, based on training and experience, he suspected the baggie contained a controlled dangerous substance. Brown’s wife allegedly approached as Brown tried to hand the baggie to her.

After Brown was taken into custody, deputies searched him and reported finding a plastic tie-off baggie containing 30 blue-gray pills marked “20” on one side and “M” on the other. The deputy identified the pills as suspected oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance. The report states Brown did not have a prescription for the pills and that they were not in proper prescription packaging.

The deputy said Brown was advised of his rights and agreed to speak. Brown allegedly admitted he did not have a prescription for the oxycodone, that he was possessing it, and that the pills were oxycodone. He was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis.

Brown was released on his own recognizance after the June arrest. Conditions of release included that he not engage in criminal activity, appear in court, and abstain from alcohol or the abusive use or possession of narcotics or other controlled dangerous substances without a prescription. The June case remains open, with a court date reset from August 13, 2026, to September 15, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court. The St. Mary’s County Public Defender entered an appearance for Brown on July 1, 2026.
