Calvin Dennis Craney, 65, of Upper Marlboro, has been charged in Calvert County with possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of CDS paraphernalia after a deputy responded to a welfare check at a Dunkirk gas station on June 19, 2026.

A deputy with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 4:21 a.m. to the BP gas station on West Chesapeake Beach Road in Dunkirk after emergency communications reported a man had been sleeping in a red vehicle for about two to three hours. When the deputy arrived, he reported finding a red 2019 GMC Sierra parked at a gas pump, with the vehicle off and no gas pump attached.

The deputy reported seeing Craney lying in the driver’s seat, along with multiple alcoholic beverage containers inside the vehicle. Some were open and others were unopened, and a Corona Extra can was visible in the center console. The deputy said he knocked on the window to wake Craney, who then made eye contact, started the truck, rolled down the window and spoke with him. When asked what was going on, Craney allegedly replied, “nothing.”

The deputy said Craney acknowledged he had been asleep. When asked where he was coming from, Craney allegedly said he lived “right next door” and referred to the Belmore neighborhood. When asked where he thought he was, Craney reportedly looked around and said he was at a gas station but could not provide the name. The deputy said Craney stated he was from Upper Marlboro and, when asked if he believed he was in Upper Marlboro, replied yes.

While speaking with Craney, the deputy reported observing slurred speech, red and bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The deputy said that while waiting for a license and warrant check, Craney moved the Corona Extra can from the center console to the passenger side, out of the deputy’s view. The deputy then advised Craney to call someone to pick him up and take the truck because of his alleged intoxicated state.

As Craney leaned forward to look for his phone, the deputy reported seeing a glass pipe with a burnt end sticking up from the rear of the center console cup holder. The deputy said emergency communications also advised that Craney had a potential warrant through Charles County. Craney was then asked to step out of the truck and was placed in handcuffs without incident.

A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up five hollow glass smoking devices with burnt ends and residue, a push rod with residue, a black digital scale, a small ball of copper wire, a plastic bag with white powder residue, two folding knives with white powder residue on the blades, a blue pill cutter with white residue, 16 small white rocks of suspected crack cocaine, one larger rock of suspected crack cocaine, and two bags of marijuana. The deputy also reported that the center console had a significant amount of white powder and residue that could not be collected, and that a photo was taken to document it.

The suspected crack cocaine was later weighed at 29 grams inside the bag, according to the filing. The larger bag of marijuana weighed 34 grams, and the smaller bag weighed 28 grams. The suspected crack cocaine and paraphernalia were packaged and sent to the Maryland State Police lab.

Craney was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center without incident. At his initial appearance on June 19, 2026, he waived an attorney for that hearing and was released on a $2,000 unsecured personal bond, with conditions that he not engage in criminal activity and appear in court when notified.
