Calvin Chris Cherry, 44, of Brandywine, faces charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and trespassing on private property after authorities said he threatened an adult male victim with a knife near a Waldorf park-and-ride. He also faces a separate trespassing charge connected to the same hotel property one day earlier.
Charles County Sheriff’s Office officers responded at about 8:17 a.m. on July 10, 2026, to Crain Highway in Waldorf following a report of an assault involving a weapon.
The adult male victim told officers he had checked out of the Super 8 on Crain Highway and walked across the street to the Smallwood Drive West park-and-ride to wait for a bus. He said that Cherry approached him wearing a mask and threatened to stab him while holding a silver knife in his right hand.
The victim said he ran across Crain Highway, called police and attempted to keep his distance from Cherry by standing in the roadway. He then walked along Crain Highway until he returned to the hotel parking lot.
Officers detained Cherry, who refused to provide meaningful information about the reported confrontation. Cherry told investigators that the adult male victim “repeatedly knocked on his hotel room door” between July 9 and July 10, 2026. Cherry also stated that he “did not know” the man.
Police said they found a silver knife with a black handle in a case around Cherry’s neck. Officers also recovered a black-and-gray face mask that was reportedly resting on top of his head.
Investigators reviewed hotel surveillance video and said it showed Cherry inside the hotel on the third floor. Authorities said Cherry had been indefinitely barred from the property in November 2025. He was arrested and taken to the Charles County detention center for processing.
Cherry was initially ordered held without bond after a judicial officer found a reasonable likelihood that he posed a danger to the alleged victim, other people or the community. He waived an attorney for his initial appearance and requested a preliminary hearing. At a July 13, 2026, bond review, a judge released him on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 5, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
The separate trespassing allegation stems from events at the hotel on July 9, 2026. A Charles County Sheriff’s Office officer said deputies were assisting detectives with an arrest warrant and a search of a hotel room shortly before 10 p.m.
Police said Cherry had previously been barred from the hotel during an unrelated arrest on November 19, 2025. He was again told that he was trespassing and needed to leave. The officer alleged that Cherry became disorderly while departing and continuously yelled explicit words at officers. A summons was issued charging him with trespassing, with a preliminary inquiry scheduled for August 31, 2026.
