St. Mary’s County Government has announced that several public cooling centers will be available from Wednesday, July 15, through Saturday, July 18, 2026, due to extreme heat in the forecast.
Heat index values are expected to reach as high as 106 degrees this week. Residents who need relief from the heat may visit any of the following locations during normal business hours:
Charlotte Hall Library, 37600 New Market Road, Charlotte Hall from Wednesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Garvey Senior Activity Center, 23630 Hayden Farm Lane, Leonardtown, Wednesday and Thursday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Leonardtown Library, 23630 Hayden Farm Lane, Leonardtown, Wednesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Lexington Park Library, 21677 FDR Boulevard, Lexington Park, Wednesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Loffler Senior Activity Center, 21905 Chancellor’s Run Road, Great Mills, Wednesday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Northern Senior Activity Center, 29655 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall from Wednesday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen, 20331 Point Lookout Road, Great Mills from Wednesday through Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Three Oaks Center, 46905 Lei Drive, Lexington Park on Wednesday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The listed times are normal business hours and are subject to change.
County officials are encouraging residents to check on neighbors, family members and loved ones, particularly older adults and people with disabilities or other functional needs.
Residents should remain hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
