Randolph Tyler Morningstar, 32, of Lusby, has been charged with theft of $100 to less than $1,500, obstructing and hindering a police officer, and fraudulently using another person’s identity to avoid prosecution following an alleged trading card theft at a Prince Frederick Walmart.
A deputy with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Walmart on Solomons Island Road in Prince Frederick at about 4:50 p.m. on July 13, 2026, after receiving a report of a theft that allegedly occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m.
The store’s loss prevention manager told the deputy that a white man wearing glasses and displaying a neck tattoo entered the store and stole boxes of baseball and basketball cards. The manager provided surveillance video from the store’s self-checkout area.
According to the deputy’s account, the footage showed the man holding a lower-priced pack of baseball cards beneath a larger box. Investigators allege he scanned the smaller pack, priced at $6.97, while making it appear that he was scanning the larger box, priced at $49.47. He then allegedly placed the larger box in the bagging area without scanning it.
The same method was allegedly used with a $4.47 pack of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and boxes of basketball cards priced at $21.87 each. Authorities said the stolen merchandise included two Panini Donruss Baseball Mega Boxes and nine Panini Select Basketball Hanger Boxes, with a combined value of $296.77.
The man allegedly left the store without paying for the larger boxes and was seen entering a silver 2016 Kia Sportage. Deputies traced the vehicle to a Lusby residence, where two people shown an image from the surveillance footage identified the man as Morningstar.
Deputies later located Morningstar at a bowling alley on Solomons Island Road in Huntingtown. The investigating deputy said Morningstar matched the person shown in the store footage.
When contacted, Morningstar allegedly used his brothers name and said Randolph was his brother. He was unable to provide identification, according to the account. Several people at the bowling alley reportedly told deputies they knew him as Tyler Morningstar or by the bowling nickname “Ty Money.”
Morningstar was arrested, and a search allegedly uncovered two of the stolen baseball card boxes inside his backpack. The deputy also reported finding an open strip of Suboxone. Morningstar contacted his girlfriend to provide a photograph of a prescription, but the deputy wrote that the visible portion of the label read “Morningstar, Ra,” which the deputy believed was consistent with the first letters of Randolph.
Authorities said Morningstar later confirmed that he was Randolph Tyler Morningstar after learning that he would be taken to jail. Investigators determined that the name he initially provided belonged to his brother. The deputy alleged that providing the false identity delayed and obstructed the investigation.
Morningstar was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center. Authorities also reported that he had multiple outstanding warrants from Virginia and that Spotsylvania County officials planned to extradite him after the Calvert County charges were resolved.
At his initial appearance late July 13, Morningstar waived an attorney for that proceeding. A judicial officer ordered him held without bond, citing the nature of the allegations, a prior record of failing to appear, and the reported short length of his residence in the community and Maryland.
A bond review was held July 14, 2026, and Morningstar remained held without bond. The Calvert County Public Defender’s Office entered its appearance the following day.
