Bettye Gail Shomette, 78,

July 22, 2026

Bettye Gail Shomette, 78, passed away July 17, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born February 5, 1948, to Rodney Ralph and Bertha Frances (Jenkins) Shomette. Bettye was raised on her family farm off Jewel Road, before moving with her family to Bristol, where she remained until her passing.

Bettye was a true farm girl and loved being on the farm raising horses, cats and all animals. Bettye and her twin sister, Bonnie, rode their horses in the Cherry Blossom Parade when they were younger. Although she had many horses over the years, Teddy Bear was her heart horse. Snoopy was her devoted cat that she loved so much. She also relished fishing, crabbing, and going to the beach with friends and family.

Bettye was employed by the U.S. Naval Academy for over 35 years. She held various roles while there but was primarily the Executive Secretary for the Captain of the Supply Department. She was also in charge of the Midshipmen student exchange for foreign students and in coordinating their travel.

Most of all, Bettye loved being with her twin sister, Bonnie. The two of them were inseparable and enjoyed doing everything together, especially shopping at antique shops, auctions and flea markets. She always put other people first and loved doing things to make others happy.

She is survived by her devoted sister Bonnie Sudnick and her husband Daniel as well as many cousins: Marsha Wall Taylor, Courtney Weems Lohman, Teddy Weems, Loch Weems, Melissa Weems Bartek, Lochlan Weems, and many other extended family members and friends.
