“Car Repo Standoff” Ends After Five Hours in Hobby Lobby Parking Lot

September 16, 2017

On Friday, September 15th, 2017 at approximately 1:45 p.m. SIA Towing of Lanham MD, attempted to repossess a vehicle.

SIA towing received repossession paperwork. Tow truck driver Toby was dispatched to the Hobby Lobby parking lot, after GPS tracking had located the vehicle. Toby located the Lexus in the parking lot, and lifted the car onto his tow truck. While attempting to secure the vehicle, an unidentified driver made contact with Toby. The Lexus driver requested to get “some personal items” out of the vehicle, and Toby allowed her to enter the car. Once in the Lexus, the driver refused to exit the vehicle. Toby contacted law enforcement, and they responded to the scene. Police advised Toby this issue was a civil matter since no crimes were committed. While deputies were on the scene Toby attempted to hookup the front tires, and the driver turned on the car and moved the front wheels, potentially endangering Toby. Police informed the driver she was not allowed to endanger him or damage his equipment. The Lexus driver allowed Toby to finish securing the vehicle, while she remained in the driver seat. Deputies left the scene, and advised Toby to call back if there was a crime committed.

Toby told the police and Driver “I have a full tank of gas and air conditioning, I can be here all weekend.”

Toby and the Lexus driver began a standoff. The Lexus driver refused to exit the vehicle, and Toby couldn’t tow the car with it occupied. Later in the evening, Toby observed the Lexus driver to be getting out of the car. While another unidentified individual entered and remained in the Lexus. Toby once again requested law enforcement, and St. Mary’s County Sheriffs Office Deputies responded to the location. Deputies explained the uncooperative Lexus diver, that she was receiving an hourly additional rate at approximately one hundred dollars per hour of the stand off and the repossession paperwork was correct. Deputies also requested the standoff to end, as it was impeding traffic flow of the parking lot. After approximately five hours, the Lexus driver decided to exit the vehicle with her belongings. Toby completed the repossession and left the scene with the Lexus.

The Lexus driver refused to be identified, and received an additional towing fee of approximately five hundred dollars for the standoff.

Gee, Felons can vote in this state, thanks to the liberal legislator. I wonder if that stellar body of people will soon prevent repossessions in cases like this just because the note is not kept satisfied.

    • Anonymous on September 17, 2017 at 11:17 am

Ahhhm.. felons can vote in any state…. so long as they meet the requirements……

        Wrong.

        • Cm on September 18, 2017 at 4:16 pm

Some states yes, some no. Not all.

    • Delma Windsor on September 18, 2017 at 12:40 am

I am glad that I left Maryland. If they are allowing Felons to vote. Why not let them have guns also. This woman is totally stupid. Now the lending company is not going work with her.

First rule of repo: don’t let anyone in the car you are trying to repo.

Brilliant tactic driver! According to her license plate frame she got the Lexus from a “No credit check” dealer. I wonder if they are regretting that decision….

    • A-A-Ron on September 16, 2017 at 4:55 pm

Nope they’ll resell it and she still owes whatever is due on the loan.

      • Ohbygeebygolly on September 18, 2017 at 12:39 pm

These type of Car dealers charge up to 25% interest on these car loans. That is why No Credit check. And people who go to these car dealers have no idea what they are getting into. All they care about is the monthly payment and don’t realize that they will be paying almost twice the original price of the car. A sucker born everyday.

        • Anonymous on September 18, 2017 at 6:34 pm

People sign a piece of paper that shows them the interest rate and monthly payment. People who go to these types of dealers have bad credit. Don’t want a high interest rate? Pay your bills!

        • Gary on September 18, 2017 at 7:03 pm

Probably St. Marys Motors. These dealers don’t care if you are one day late, as soon as you are they repop the car and sell it again. Gotta know what you are getting into. I see she has an Uber placard, she was trying to work anyway. A lesson to the young’uns, don’t screw your credit up.

    • Keep It Real on September 17, 2017 at 3:38 pm

You can Shake your freaking head all you want, the Insurance wasn’t paid or at least not paid anywhere near on time, $50k isn’t something you just let some borrow without the possibility of: fully recovering that (period)! It states pretty clearly in the Contract, that the Loan is in default when “a coverage of insurance lapses,” blame the Owner/Driver for not abiding by the freaking Contract, they don’t send out Repo teams, the day of an insurance lapse; though if it was my money, lent, I know I’d Repo it. Stop letting negligent people get by with every excuse of WHY NOT, instead in life, it should be why you can. The lack of compassion is based on the owners choices & actions, all based in negligence, arrogance, ignorance, an entitled attitude, and generally wasting of precious resources at the Tax payer’s expense. She’s lucky she didn’t get a couple parting charges from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office for “Not Complying with a Reasonable Request by an Officers,” “Disorderly Conduct,” and “Hindering a Police Investigation”, all subjective changes that could have lead to wasting of 40-50hrs of her time, luckily it was just $500 and no Officer/Court interference.

        • Heather on September 19, 2017 at 9:18 am

          I’ve gathered that.

    • SonjaD on September 18, 2017 at 6:37 am

A car is NOT going to be repossessed for no insurance. The insurance company will just drop you, DMV will let you know you’re not insured, you’ll pay $75 a day to the state until you get insurance. The state does NOT want your car, that’s a liability to them. Your car will be popped when you don’t pay the note for a few months. The only person who dropped the ball was the chick driving the Lexus.

      • Anonymous on September 18, 2017 at 9:24 pm

If you fail to maintain insurance on your vehicle the finance company does have the right to repossess your car

      • Jim on September 18, 2017 at 9:26 pm

If you do not have insurance on the vehicle the finance company has the right to repossess the vehicle

    • ( . Y . ) on September 18, 2017 at 8:06 am

Seriously, I’d love to know what you are trying to say…

      • Q on September 18, 2017 at 1:47 pm

Sorry but you are incorrect. I live in this state and have first hand knowledge. My now ex-wife and I split she took one car I took the other and we both got separate insurance but both cars remain jointly financed. Months later I received a letter from my finance company informing me they had been notified the vehicle my ex-wife was in possession of no longer had insurance. I was told to show proof of insurance or a repossession would be put in place.

        • SonjaD on September 19, 2017 at 9:12 am

I live here too. My daughters car sat in my driveway for six months with no tags and insurance. She still made the payments. Guess what? The car wasn’t repoed. Funny how that happens. Pay your damn car note, it won’t happen.

          • Anonymous on September 21, 2017 at 8:43 am

You must have insurance on a registered vehicle, that much I know for sure. Not sure if it’s the same on a vehicle with no registration but still has a lien.

        • ( . Y . ) on September 19, 2017 at 10:58 am

Sorry, but I’m not incorrect. Your response was to the “incorrect” person Q. You putz…

    • Anonymous on September 18, 2017 at 8:35 am

Non-Paid Insurance doesn’t send the Repo team out.

If you don’t have Insurance on your car, you get pull over, your car gets impounded.

That woman shouldda been locked up-if all was right in the world.” keep it real” was correct on possible charges. That being said, the Sheriff dept decided not to, thinking that fat loud mouth entitlement queen wold have resisted, requiring the deployment of pepper spray or a taser, or both.; Yelling and screaming at the top of her lungs about PO-lice brutality. The Post would have it on the front page of the metro section. THAT would have gone viral and it would have been Ferguson at the Hobby Lobby. Discretion can be the better part of valor. Weigh it against the minor nature of the offenses and no injuries threatened, probably a wise choice. Frustrating, but wise with the current environment.

We’ve all seen it before. Get used to it. It is who we have become.

For me, I’m gonna make t-shirts saying “Black Lexus’s Matter”

P.S. The EBT card comment was brilliant

  23. Anonymous on September 18, 2017 at 8:29 am

What makes anyone think they can keep something they have not paid for. No vehicle belongs to anyone until that last payment is made. People need to grow up and be a responsible adult. This woman acted like a spoiled child over something she knew she couldn’t afford. Any responsible person would have retuned the car voluntarily and tried to work with the dealer to get out of future payments or get into something they can afford.

    • Adam 12 on September 19, 2017 at 10:20 am

The entitled one in this story apparently. It is obviously the repo company’s fault she cannot make her payments.
