Elizabeth Eleanor “Aunt Betty Turkey” Betts Shipp

Elizabeth Eleanor “Aunt Betty Turkey” Betts Shipp passed peacefully on January 4, 2018 at St. Mary’s Nursing Home in Leonardtown, Maryland.

Betts was born on December 25, 1927 in Anacostia, Washington DC to the late Elmer Earl Hayes and Annie Lelia (Herbert) Hayes.

Betts was employed by the Canadian Embassy in the 40’s, Managed Dupont Drycleaners in the 50-70s, Prince Georges County in the 80’s and Raleigh Management 90’s, 2000’s. In her hay day she was an avid bowler and always enjoyed a “spirited” game of Pinochle.

She is a 27 year breast cancer survivor, a 2 week colon cancer survivor and #1 Aunt. If you asked her how she got to the #1 Aunt, she would say “it’s pretty simple, I out lived them all.” She told that joke on more than 60 appointments this past year.

Betts is survived by her godson, Edward “Guy” Curley III and his wife, Keli, of Mechanicsville, MD, her nephews and niece, Stephen Shipp and his wife, Joni, of Gambrills MD, Donald Shipp Jr. and his wife, Lorraine, of Altamonte Springs, FL, Robert Shipp and his wife, Vicki, of La Plata, MD, Sandra Shipp and her husband, James, of Waldorf, MD, and David Shipp, of Clearwater, FL. She is also survived by her #1 neighbor, Peggy Nosek, her Friday lunch partner Liz Pierce and many, many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her nephews, Garry Shipp and Brian Shipp, the love of her life, Ernest LeRoy “Uncle Lee” Shipp, her brother, Elton Earl Hayes and her parents.

Bett’s inurnment (Private) will be February 2nd at Washington National Cemetery, Suitland MD.

Bett’s Life Celebration will be held on February 3, 2018 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Hickory Hills East Clubhouse located at 22501 Iverson Drive, Great Mills, Maryland 20634.

A separate gathering will be held at Buckets Bar and Grill on February 17, 2018 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Forest Dunes Resort located at 5511 North Ocean Blvd, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, 29577 and her ashes will be spread into the ocean.
