Latoya Sherese Jones, 38, of Waldorf
On Thursday, January 25, 2018 at approximately 5:15 p.m., officers from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to Krefeld Lane in Waldorf for the report of an assault in progress.
Upon arrival, officers located the 12-year-old victim who had injuries consistent with being struck by several different objects, including a belt and an electrical cord. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division were contacted and responded.
The on-scene investigation revealed the victim was struck by her mother, identified as Latoya Sherese Jones, 38, of Waldorf, with numerous objects and punched in the face several times. The victim had numerous injuries and was treated by EMS before being transported to a hospital.
According to court documents, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office received a call from 10-year-old male who reported that his mother was threatening to kill his sister, he said that his sister’s nose was bleeding. Charles County Sheriff’s Officers arrived on the scene and located a twelve-year-old girl and her mother inside the home.
Police spoke with 12-year-old victim, who said she talked to her mother that afternoon via telephone, and her mother was upset with her and accused her of sending her a text message that included “cursing” language. The victim said her mother has used physical discipline in the past and she prepared for any physical discipline that she would receive that evening by putting on several pairs of underwear to protect her body. When her mother arrived home, she told the victim to lay on the floor, so she could beat her with a leather belt. Her mother then noticed the victim was wearing several layers of clothing and ordered her to take off her clothes and to lay on the floor. The victim said she removed all her clothing and laid face down on the floor completely nude. Her mother then started hitting her with a kitchen spatula until it broke. Her mother then retrieved a leather belt end began striking her numerous times all over her body. The victim said she was able to catch the belt with her hands and get away from her mother. The victim threw the belt across the room, and her mother repeatedly punched the victim in her body and face with a closed fist, that caused the victim’s nose to bleed as result of being punched. The victim started swinging back at her mother to defend herself. The mother stopped punching her and again retrieved the belt. The victim said as she was walking away when her mother put the belt around her neck and briefly choked her. The victim advised she was able to get the belt from around her neck . The mother then retrieved a white electrical extension cord and kitchen broom, which she used to repeatedly hit the victim. The mother then yelled to her 10-year-old son to bring her a knife, the son then brought a knife from the kitchen and handed it to his mother. The mother then held the knife blade within an inch of the victim’s temple. The mother then used a broom and struck the victim again. The victim ran into the bathroom and locked the door in an attempt to stop her mother’s attack. While inside the bathroom, the victim started cleaning herself up and was feeling light headed . While the victim was inside the bathroom, the mother began unscrewing the door knob and lock. The mother was eventually able to remove the door lock and gain entry. Once in the bathroom, the mother began repeatedly punching the victim with a closed fist.
The 12-year-old female victim had multiple visible welts and bruises on both arms, legs, buttocks, a bloody nose and a cut on her lip. The injuries appeared consistent with the victims statement. While inside the residence, officers observed a knife, extension cord, leather belt, and kitchen broom in the area where the assault occurred. Officers also observed a black and red screwdriver that was believed to have been used to remove the door lock from the bathroom door. Officers observed blood on the victim’s shirt, knife, floor, and paper towels in the residence.
Latoya Sherese Jones, was placed under arrest and transported to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office District III station, where she was charged with second degree child abuse, first degree assault, and second degree assault.
Officers attempted to interview Defendant Jones however, she did not provide a statement. Jones had obvious blood on her clothes and a small cut on the inside of her right hand.
