Special Agent, Juli Bythrow, from the the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, was notified of a stolen gift card out of Valley Lee.
The card was used at several locations throughout Charles and St. Mary’s Counties on August 9 and 10th, 2016. A postal customer mailed a $100 gift card to her daughter-in-law, in Aldie, VA on August 9, 2016. The gift card was sent inside a birthday card and envelope, which were mailed out of the Valley Lee Post Office. The victim later learned the greeting card had not been received by the daughter-in-law, but the card was redeemed at several locations around the Southern Maryland area.
The OIG’s investigation revealed the gift card had been used at various locations, including the International House of Pancakes, in Lexington Park, MD and a 7-Eleven, in Waldorf, on August 9th and 10th, 2016. Agents obtained surveillance video of two individuals using the gift card at the above mentioned locations. The individuals were later identified by the Valley Lee Postmaster as Robert Jupiter, and Jupiter’s then girlfriend.
On Tuesdays, Jupiter worked as a substitute driver for Valley Lee Post Office. He picked up outgoing mail from the Post Office between 4:40 and 4:45 p.m., and drove that route on August 9, 2016. Special Agent, Juli Bythrow and Ed Brathwaite, from the the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Postal Service, interviewed Jupiter on June 23, 2017. During the interview, Jupiter confirmed he is the individual pictured in the recovered video surveillance, but denied stealing the card out of the mail. He claimed he purchased the gift card from someone on the street, near the Waldorf Carrier Annex.
On February 7, 2018, a criminal summons was issued for Robert Lee Jupiter III, 35 of Lexington Park, for theft, less than $1,000.
