On Sunday, February 11, 2018, at approximately 9:25 p.m., Deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Michael Road, in Waldorf, to serve a temporary peace order on Richards Madden, 82, of Waldorf.
Prior to arriving at the residence police were informed that Madden had made threats of mass destruction against the Sage Point Nursing Home in La Plata and Madden stated he was going to shoot everybody up. The La Plata Police Department is currently investigating the threats made against Sage Point.
The deputies were told Madden was in possession of several firearms. Police made contact with Madden when he answered the front door and stated he was naked and he wanted to put his clothes on, police advised him to do so. After a brief moment, police knocked on the door again and Madden answered the door, and stated he still needed to put his clothes on and he was naked. Police then advised Madden to open the door and offered their assistance. Once inside the residence, Madden stated he needed to go to his bedroom to dress and police followed him to his bedroom.
As Madden entered his bedroom, police observed him pick up a Glock 9mm handgun, from his bed. Madden then pointed the gun directly at police. Fearing for his life, one officer immediately retrieved and took a cover behind drywall in the hallway. At this time, he pointed his firearm towards Madden and ordered him to drop the gun and step outside his bedroom with his hands up. Madden complied with orders and was placed under arrest without any further incident.
Due to Madden‘s physical condition, he was transported to a local hospital by Ambulance.
Madden stated there were more firearms in his bedroom. The firearm that Madden pointed at police and three rifles were recovered from the scene.
