On Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at approximately 5:20 a.m., Deputy R. Roszell of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Carroll Road, in Lexington Park, for the report of a burglary.
When police arrived, they made contact with a female victim who advised she woke up after hearing a loud noise. The victim went to investigate, and as she entered her kitchen a male intruder, later identified as Robert Frances Wayne Bridgett, 28, of Lexington Park, lunged and grabbed her while stating, “don’t fight me, I don’t want to hurt you.” The victim began to fight against the intruder, and the two struggled with each other all the way back into the victim’s bedroom where she fell to her hands and knees. During the struggle in her bedroom, the victim advised she noticed a knife on her bed which was placed there by the defendant at some point during the incident. the victim was able to grab the knife, but Bridgett was able to wrestle it away from her which is when he threw it across the room.
Due to having prior knowledge of Bridgett and knowing she was exhausted and couldn’t fight anymore, the victim attempted to talk to Bridgett, and asked Bridgett to have a cigarette with her as a ploy to stop the assault and go back into the kitchen with her. As they entered the kitchen, the victim observed food and drink on the counter which came from her refrigerator and had been partially consumed by Bridgett. The victim also observed a black trash bag, black duct tape, and blue wire on the kitchen counter. The victim knew these items to have come from her detached garage. The victim then advised Bridgett to “get his ass out of here” to which Bridgett asked if she was going to call the police. The victim advised the defendant that she should call the police but allowed the defendant to leave the residence before doing so. Bridgett had fled the area prior to police arrival, and upon further inspection of the victim’s residence, a tow rope and rubber glove was located in a hallway next to her bedroom. the victim advised the tow rope also came from her detached garage, but she was unsure of where the defendant obtained the rubber glove. the items taken from the victim’s detached garage had a total value of approximately $5 .00. the victim also noticed a broken window on the side of her house which was not broken prior to her going to bed.
At approximately 8:55 p.m., Deputy S. Tirpak made contact with Bridgett after family members called the police advising he wanted to “turn himself in.” After reading Bridgett his rights he advised he didn’t want to talk because he wanted a lawyer. Bridgett was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he was charged with the following
- Home invasion
- Second degree assault
- First degree burglary
- Second degree burglary
- 2 counts of Fourth degree burglary
- Destruction of property
