Gertrude Louise Sullivan, 98, of Ridge, MD died peacefully February 23, 2018, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, MD.
She was born March 20, 1919 in Washington, D.C. to the late Aubrey Merchant and Esther Bromwell.
Gertrude and her late husband, Bernard Franklin Sullivan, Sr., moved to Southern Maryland in 1975. She was a long time member of Callaway Baptist Church. She read from the Bible daily. She enjoyed dancing and making ceramics. She was an excellent cook, and made many delicious family meals. She loved having her family come to visit, especially the grandchildren, and enjoyed preparing meals for them. She was known for her rockfish cakes, which everyone enjoyed. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 255 for 47 years. She held many positions, including Unit President 10 times. She was also a 35 year member of Salon 795.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Betty Jean Megee of Herndon, VA and Paul A. Sullivan (Sandy) of Ridge, MD; her siblings, Jane Edelen of Vienna, VA and Junior Aubrey Merchant (Polly) of Moneta, VA; 21 grandchildren; many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and great-great-great grandchildren; and many extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bernard Franklin Sullivan, Sr.; her children: Ruth Ann Lambert, Bernard Sullivan, Jr., and Janet E. Nicholson; and her siblings: Edith Fairfax, Audrey Morgan, Doris Paxton, and June Nordeen.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., with a Funeral Service celebrated at 5:00 p.m., at Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mickey Sullivan, Bennie Sullivan, Robert Lambert, Rodney Lambert, Mike Turner, Ben Hamilton.
