Humane Society International Saves Nearly 200 Dogs from Meat Farms in South Korea, Calvert County Humane Society Assists

October 30, 2020

The Humane Society International saved 170 dogs from a dog meat farm in Haemi, South Korea, where the animals were suffering and awaiting to be sold and slaughtered for their meat.

Starting near the end of September of 2020, members of Humane Society International flew to South Korea and entered a two week quarantine at a government sanctioned hotel in Seoul, South Korea.

Members completed the quarantine on October 19, 2020, and started the rescue and removal process from the farm. Just four days later on October 23, 2020, all dogs landed at the Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

As most of the dogs are being provided shelter and care in the D.C., Maryland, Virginia area, either directly with local area animal shelters or temporary shelters ran by the Animal Rescue Team of the Humane Society of the United States, along with the assistance from RedRover., the remaining dogs will be taken to the HSI Canada temporary shelter located in Montreal, before placement with local shelters there.

All dogs are being evaluated, receiving care and veterinary treatment needed, fed with nutritious food, and placed into warm beds. The dogs staying in the United States temporary shelters will move to shelter partners across the US over the coming months.

The Humane Society International stated they will be adding more Partners in the U.S. and Canada to the list below in the coming weeks. But for now, those interested in adoption can contact the Shelter and Rescue Partners below directly to find out how to meet the dogs and apply to adopt!

Of the total 196 dogs, 170 were rescued by HSI from the single dog meat farm in Haemi, South Korea. The other 26 dogs had been rescued by HSI from previous dog meat farm, but not able to transport them due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

A special thanks goes out to the assistance of over 1,400 citizens who donated over $40,000 since September 26, 2020
