Linwood Eugene Mozingo, Jr.,”Gene”, 70, of Leonardtown, MD, passed away Friday, November 5, 2021. Gene was born on November 13, 1950 at home in Lyells, VA to Ethel (Samuels) Mozingo and Linwood Mozingo, Sr. The family moved to Leonardtown, MD when Gene was just four years old. Gene grew up down Medleys Neck Road on the Bell Farm, alongside the bands of the Potomac River. It was there he spent his childhood playing along the river where he learned to fish and hunt. He also tended to the farm and assisted his father in harvesting tobacco.
Gene graduated from Chopticon High School in 1968. Later that year he met his true love Jackie. The couple married on March 10, 1972. They moved to Ohio briefly for Gene to attend meat cutting school and then returned back home to Leonardtown, where Gene worked as a butcher for Mattingly’s Grocery Store.
Gene’s ambition, passion, and skill would soon lead him to the construction industry. He began an apprenticeship with Mr. Pickle where he quickly mastered the trade. From there he went on to begin his own construction company. He built a wide array of custom homes throughout St. Mary’s and Charles counties.
Gene was given a second chance at life when he received the first successful dual kidney-pancreas transplant in the state of Maryland.
Gene held a variety on interests including hot rod muscle cars, watching classic westerns such as Gun Smoke, anything on the History Channel, playing blackjack, and listening to rock and roll music with the base wide open.
If you knew Gene, you knew his humor. He always enjoyed a good practical joke. His home was the place where his children’s friends gathered frequently and shared in the laughter.
Gene is survived by his wife Jacquelin “Jackie” Mozingo of Leonardtown, MD, his children Mark Mozingo and his wife Nellisha Ramdass of Fredricksburg, VA, Jenna Mattingly and her husband Kyle Mattingly of Leonardtown, MD, two grandsons Sawyer and Boen Mattingly, nephew Tony Thrift and wife Madeline Thrift, and nieces Sandra Bray and Donna Lewis. He is preceded in death by his parents Linwood and Ethel Mozingo, as well as his sister Hazel Thrift.
The family will have a life celebration at Christ Episcopal Church Hall, 37497 Zach Fowler Road, Chaptico, MD 20621 on Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
