John “Pop” E. Kusztos, 70

November 15, 2021

John “Pop” E. Kusztos, 70, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on October 29, 2021 in Mechanicsville, MD. He was born on March 24, 1951 in Barberton, OH to Elmer John Kusztos and Katherine (Kusztos)McCall. He was one (1) of four (4) children.

After he graduated from Dorman High School in 1971, he served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force for six (6) years before being honorably discharged in 1976. When he returned home, he started working at the Washington Post Newspaper as a mailer. He worked there for 17 years, making many friends of co-workers and quickly becoming a staple to the office. His work ethic was admirable and he will be greatly missed by so many people whose lives he’s touched and brightened with his personality and kind heart.

In 1972 he met the love of his life Stephanie Kusztos. They dated for a while but it didn’t take long for them to realize that they were meant for each other. On Dec 1, 1973 they said their vows to one another. And eventually settled in Southern Maryland.

To know Pop is to know the meaning of a friend. He had never met a stranger and was a genuinely kind soul. He never took anything too seriously. He was always willing to lend a hand or an ear to anyone that needed help or just someone to talk to. Pop and Stephanie survived the loss of their son, Travis in 2009. It was devastating but they grew together as a family and soon Pop was his grandsons’ best friend. Pop was always on the go, but the one thing that he made sure to make time for, was his grandsons. They were the Three Amigos and he loved spending time with them. He loved his son, Shawn and his daughter-in-law, Doralee. She was the daughter he never had. When he wasn’t on the go, Pop was relaxing at home with the love of his life, Stephanie and their beloved puppies. He will be missed greatly by many but not as much as his family.

John is survived by his wife Stephanie Kusztos of Mechanicsville, MD; his son Shawn Kusztos and Doralee Kusztos of Mechanicsville, MD; his grandchildren Cameron and Colton; his brother, Greg Kusztos of Inman, SC and his sisters Dianne Wilson of Spartanburg, SC and Sharon Hodge of Inman, SC. He is preceded in death by both of his parents Elmer John Kusztos and Katherine Kusztos McCall and his beloved son, Travis N. Kusztos.
