UPDATE: St. Mary’s County Jury Convicts Man for Murder in 2022 Shooting

UPDATE 12/12/2023: State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling announced that following a four-day jury trial, a St. Mary’s County jury convicted Demetrius Rashud Puifory, 45, of California, Maryland, of second-degree murder and related firearm charges.

On April 28, 2022, at approximately 4:57 p.m., St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of the 46700 block of Marshall Boulevard in Lexington Park for reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival, deputies located the victim in the grass suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Demetrius Puifory was later identified as the suspect who shot the victim.

The 21-year-old victim was pronounced deceased over a year later on August 8, 2023. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner certified the manner of death as “homicide” and the cause of death as “complications of quadriplegia due to gunshot wound of the neck.”

“The facts surrounding this case are especially heart-wrenching. A young victim’s life has been lost to senseless gun violence at the hands of a convicted felon who was prohibited from the possession of the firearm. I send my sincerest condolences to the victim’s family,” said Sterling. “Our office is committed to prosecuting gun violence cases to the fullest extent possible and to put criminals on notice that these violent acts will not be tolerated in our County.”

The defendant faces a maximum of up to 66 years in prison. He will remain held without bond pending the sentencing hearing.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Proctor prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary’s County.

Detective Tyler Payne of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was the lead investigator.

The Honorable Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.

UPDATE 7/27/2022: On April 28, 2022, at 4:57 p.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 46700 block of Marshall Boulevard in Lexington Park, for the reported shooting.

Deputies arrived on scene and located the victim, Danicco Theodore Hall, age 21 of Lexington Park, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported by helicopter to an area trauma center in critical condition.

Detectives and Crime Lab personnel from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

On July 26, 2022, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division arrested Darrick Monte Evans, age 43, and Demetrius Rashud Puifory, age 44, both of California, MD.

Evans and Puifory were each charged them with the following:

  • Attempted First Degree Murder
  • Attempted Second Degree Murder
  • Armed Robbery
  • Robbery
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Multiple Handgun Offenses

Evans and Puifory remain incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown on a no-bond status.

The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

4/28/2022: On Thursday, April 28, 2022, at approximately 5:00 p.m., police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the 21650 block of Eric Road in Lexington Park, for the reports of multiple victims possibly shot.

Police arrived on the scene to find one adult male victim with multiple gunshots wounds.

Fire and rescue personnel arrived on the scene and started life saving measures. A short time later firefighters reported the victim had a pulse.

Emergency medical personnel transported the patient to the Maryland State Police Aircraft Hangar in Hollywood, where Trooper 7 landed to transport the victim to an area trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

No other known injuries have been reported.

Police are investigating the shooting have collected numerous pieces of evidence from the scene and nearby areas.
